Starting this post with a deep breath because, working in the DEI space right now, Lord knows I need it. One of the things I tell our clients is that the need for rooting your culture and DEI strategy in a clear vision and clear, mission-aligned values, is that when the winds of what’s popular blow in a new direction, you won’t be blown off course because you’ll know, as an organization, exactly who you want to be and why. DEI can be done terribly. It can be done inconsiderately and can use shame and bullying to try to achieve its desired goal. So can any industry. But when done well, this is what it really does: ✅ Allows you to attract values-aligned candidates and objectively assess them to make sure you build out a high-performing, well-rounded team ✅ Signals to consumers what values matter to you, building actual brand loyalty ✅ Helps ensure that anyone you spent tons of resources hiring is set up to be as successful as possible, in turn ensuring they’ll have a positive impact on the business ✅ Helps your team build the confidence and skillfulness to navigate the inevitable conflict that comes with engaging across different beliefs, mindsets, and working styles ✅ Helps you be proactive in knowing how you want to support your team AND use your business resources to make positive impact when shit hits the fan out in the world If you’re a people leader in NYC and want to chat about how to double-down thoughtfully on DEI as an org in the face of this incoming administration, hit me up.
