Pleasure read: Toju Emi E Should I focus on prevention or cure? This question often echoes in my mind as I recall my childhood visits to my family friend’s pharmacy, “Toju Emi E,” which translates to “Preserve Your Life.” The irony is that the place synonymous with life preservation was also a hub of pain—injections, wound dressings, and other medical procedures. How could a name so full of promise be linked to such discomfort? One day, while waiting outside for my punishment in form of rigorous wound dressing, I reflected on something one of our area Egbon once said after he visited his own brother a lecturer “Mo toju emi mi,” meaning he took care of his life with good food he enjoyed while dined with the University of Ibadan professor. He joked that his one day opportunity to eat healthy would ensure he lives at least a day longer! Funny but I was Inspired, I promised myself that I would open a food shop next to the pharmacy the following week also named Toju Emi E, to see whether people would prefer the pain of treating illness or the pleasures of healthy eating. Toju emi e at my food shop or at the hands of straight faced nurses 😂 While I never opened that shop, I now serve on the board of Farmshare Food Hub, a food hub in Ibadan focused on providing affordable, healthy food through connecting farmers produce directly to consumers, of course with advocacy for safe food production among our farmers. I believe that food and farmers are the foundation of our health. Although our genes and environment play a significant role, we can influence our genetic expression through a healthy diet. Farmers should strive to produce safe and nutritious food, whether it's organic or conventionally grown. As consumers, we should ask questions, seek out the best options, and prioritize less chemical use and more natural practices. I urge you to choose the “Toju Emi E” of health and wellness.

🔬 Innovation in Food Science – Animal Free Dairy? 🐮🚫 Health Canada has recently approved Remilk, a lab grown, animal-free, BLG protein that is virtually indistinguishable from real milk. The product uses microflora in a process called precision fermentation where scientists manipulate microbes to produce proteins that are almost identical to those found in milk. Since it is a product of biotechnology, you can only imagine that it has its fair share of opponents, especially in the health and wellness realm. However, growing concerns from Canadians about environmental sustainability, animal welfare, and dairy prices make alternatives increasingly appealing. One common critique of vegan products is their taste, often falling short of traditional dairy. Lab-grown milk seems to address this, but will Canadians embrace food cultivated in a lab? Innovation in food science creates a lot of buzz in the media but it is important to recognize the ongoing questions and concerns about the quality, safety, and efficacy of these types of products. While certainly neat and innovative, these items are not without their critics. Our attention also turns to innovation of a different kind in the CPG space. Brands like Mindful Fud's Vegan Hunnie (made with organic apples) and Avafina's Vegan Caviar (crafted from chia seeds) exemplify creative alternatives developed by entrepreneurs using common, whole foods. While we celebrate the exciting innovations on the horizon, it's equally important to recognize brands contributing to the evolution from the kitchen, not just the lab. What are your thoughts on Health Canada's approval of Remilk? How do you feel about lab-grown products? Have you tried lab-grown milk products? Join the conversation! 🌱🥛 #FoodInnovation #LabGrown #Remilk #CPGInnovation #FoodTech #Sustainability #BrandManagement #FoodBroker #Canada #CPG #GroceryIndustry #SaludBrandManagement

The scientific discussion on Nutri-Score is extremely polarized. There is publication bias, interference of the scientists behind #NutriScore in the peer-review process and a lack of substantiation of the efficacy of Nutri-Score in real life. What should happen next? On the one hand there is the team and followers of the developers of Nutri-Score who publish and present only articles with favorable outcomes (although not all are favourable) https://lnkd.in/e5Vkufkq On the other hand there are scientists independently publishing articles of which the majority have unfavourable outcomes on Nutri-Score. It is needed to say here that the developers of the Italian NutrInform label compare their label with Nutri-Score with unfavourable outcome for Nutri-Score. Funny thing is that the Nutri-Score team has published similar articles with as winner: #NutriScore. The pro-#NutriScore lobby is very strong and denies all scientific articles that are unfavorable to NutriScore and the scientists behind NutriScore try to block unfavourable articles in the peer-review process. This is a big scientific no-go area. What should happen next? European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) where art thou? We need EFSA for a totally independent evaluation of: 1. The multi-nutrient algorithm 2. The efficacy of Nutri-Score in real life. Read here an evaluation by prof. Hans Verhagen (ex EFSA member) and me on how EFSA might evaluate the NutriScore https://lnkd.in/ewkjrC94 And our call for EFSA to start the work on the evaluation on #NutriScore https://lnkd.in/eJHvSxTn
(PDF) Nutri-Score and publication bias: it is time for an independent evaluation of the scientific substantiation of Nutri-Score. Rapid response BMJ Global Health
