Fully Funded Scholarship PhD Biomedical sciences Ulster University PhD Study : Can novel retinal imaging modalities and AI systems revolutionise Diabetic Retinopathy screening in the 21st Century? Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of blindness and visual impairment across the world. DR occurs in about 35% of people with diabetes, and the epidemic of diabetes is a significant global health concern. DR is a largely asymptomatic condition, where damage to the blood vessels in the back of the eye (the retina) occurs gradually and the slow reduction in vision is unlikely to be noticed by people with diabetes. Considering this, DR screening, where a photograph of the retina is taken and a professional examines the image for any indications of diabetic eye disease, is a universally accepted World Health Organisation (WHO) strategy for blindness prevention. If DR screening does not take place and the disease is left untreated, it will result in visual impairment and blindness. I do say that every PhD has a story and it is true. There is a story that I know about. This PhD candidate knows other alternative and verified ways of getting things done, but the supervisor is not offering the right hand of fellowship required. Years are running fast, yet, the student has no tangible output. The student is affected emotionally and in many other ways. Behind every successful PhD that was completed in record time is a supportive PhD supervisor. Dear prospective PhD applicants. Before you register for that PhD under that supervisor and in that institution, let your steps be divinely guided. If you are already in the program and your supervisor is unsupportive, I will suggest the following; 1. Be sure that the blame and faults are not coming from your end. 2. Understand the personality of your supervisor. If possible, read books on temperaments and how to relate with people whose temperament differ from yours. 3. Find a way to work with your supervisor. It may be hard, but find a way. You are the one who is in need of a PhD. 4. Surround yourself with supportive, kind-hearted and understanding family members, friends and colleagues. Share your challenges with them and ask them to be there for you. 5. Stay positive and be hopeful. 6. Go for medical checks. 7. Speak words of affirmation to your spirit, soul and body. 8.
