This week on Bunkerspot, we were in the key bunker hub of #Panama for the 2024 edition of Maritime Week Americas #MWA24. The importance of building global #alliances to accelerate the transition to #renewable #energies and Panama’s potential as a pivotal player in the shift to green #shipping were key themes in the speeches of the Dutch and British ambassadors to Panama delivered at the opening of the event. From one strategic bunker hub to another - we were in the Dutch capital to speak with Henri van der Weide, Policy Advisor, Harbour Master Division, Port of #Amsterdam, who said it expects to launch one of the world’s first dynamic bunker maps for #alternativefuels before the end of the year. We also caught up with SGMF - Leading safe maritime decarbonisation’s Memberships and Communications Manager, Claudia Beumer, to reflect on her first months in the job and discuss what needs to be done to ensure the maritime industry is prepared for the transition to new fuels. The number of proposed #greencorridors continues to grow. This week, renewable energy and maritime specialist NatPower Marine and UK port operator Peel Ports Group Group unveiled plans to establish what they say will be the first green shipping corridors between #Ireland and the #UK. In other news, Tuomas Riski, co-founder of the rotor sail company Norsepower, has resigned as CEO and has been succeeded in the role by Heikki Pöntynenöntynen; TFG Marine reported the first #LNG refuelling of its dual-fuel bunker vessel MT Diligence in Jurong Port, #Singapore; and the Proman Stena Bulk joint venture announced that the #methanol dual-fuelled Stena Prosperous, the last of six vessels in the venture’s joint fleet, was formally named in a ceremony at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre in Singapore. Yesterday the construction of Porthos was celebrated with those directly involved. The Mayor of Rotterdam, Ahmed Aboutaleb, the Minister of Climate Policy and Green Growth, Sophie Hermans and Deputy Director-General from the European Commission for Energy, Mechthild Wörsdörfer opened the event together with the CEOs of Porthos’ shareholders Gasunie, EBN (Energie Beheer Nederland) and the Port of Rotterdam. Minister Hermans: “CCS is crucial to meet climate targets. By building the first large-scale transport and storage system for CO2 in the Netherlands, Porthos is taking a big step. This will allow the industry to reduce emissions and keep a competitive industry here in the Netherlands. I am proud of all the parties who are making this possible.” Foundation for future CCS-projects CO2 storage within the Porthos project can bridge the time needed for industry to switch from fossil fuels to low- or zero-carbon alternatives. The construction of the Porthos onshore open access pipeline marks the start of the development of a future CO2 network in Northwest Europe. While Porthos will transport 2.5 million tonnes per year, the onshore Porthos pipeline is ready for 10 million tonnes, so it can also supply CO2 to future projects like Aramis. The compressor station is also ready for expansion. It forms the heart of the future CO2 hub, to which also CO2next can be connected. This liquid CO2 terminal will be able to receive and deliver liquid CO2 by ship for customers not connected to a pipeline. #ccs #porthos #co2next

Avenir starts bio-LNG supply to Destination Gotland Avenir LNG conducted the first bio-LNG delivery to Destination Gotland. The environmental-friendly fuel was delivered by Avenir’s bunker vessel “Avenir Aspiration” in the Port of Visby, Sweden. The ISCC-certified product was produced in Europe and loaded into Avenir’s bunker and transport vessel at the Port of Zeebrugge, Belgium. The replacement of fossil fuels with bio-LNG allows for a significant reduction of emissions resulting from the operations of the ferries. Marcus Risberg, CEO of Destination Gotland, was satisfied that the companies expanded their cooperation to make ferry operations on the Swedish East coast even more sustainable: “We are committed to provide comfortable and reliable transport services for our customers between the Swedish mainland and Gotland. The possibility to use bio-LNG ensures that we can provide our services in an even more sustainable way, thereby reducing the impact on the environment and population.” For the sourcing of the bio-LNG, Avenir cooperates with different biofuel traders with access to physical and mass-balanced bio-LNG at various European terminals and can provide tailor-made products and supply chains for its marine and industrial clients in Europe. Jonathan Quinn, Managing Director of Avenir LNG, commented: “As a leading supplier of small-scale LNG and owner of one of the largest global LNG bunker vessel fleets, we strive continuously to provide safe, reliable and efficient fuels whilst minimizing the environmental impact for our customers. Setting up new bio-LNG supply chains is at the core of our global growth strategy.” In 2022, Destination Gotland and Avenir signed a multi-year contract for the supply of LNG to the dual-fuel RoPax ferries “MS Gotland” and “MS Visby”. Today, Antwerp Euroterminal NV (AET) achieves a significant milestone by installing the first shore power connection for seagoing vessels in Belgium. Shore power plays a crucial role in the greening of ports as it provides docked vessels in the port with environmentally friendly and quiet electricity. This installation, built according to international ISO standards, will be operational in 2026 and stands as the pioneering initiative for seagoing vessels in Belgium. Facilitating shore power is a fundamental component of our vision to transform into a multifuel port, where alternative, low carbon fuels can be bunkered alongside conventional fuels. By embracing alternative fuels and shore power, we actively reduce our carbon footprint while driving towards our goal of becoming a climate neutral world port by 2050. Already, our port boasts numerous shore power connection points for barges and tugs, with Zeebrugge set to offer shore power for cruise ships from 2026. The project we launch today represents a significant step forward in greening our port. It is the product of years of meticulous planning, negotiation, collaboration, and hard work. As the Port Authority, we have facilitated this process, thanks in part to the forward-thinking actions of AET and GRIMALDI, who have enabled us to fulfill our role as a pioneer in the energy transition. Equally important is the involvement of the HOPAS consortium, comprising esteemed partners Techelec, Yuso and Whitewood. They have embraced this innovation within our port, assuming the associated financial risks in their role as key contributors. I would also like to express our gratitude to Flanders (VLAIO) for their financial support of €4 million through RepowerEU. This support has been instrumental in making this project possible and will continue to be vital as we drive the transformation towards a more sustainable port in the future. Lastly, I would like to acknowledge Wind aan de Stroom (W@S), who will be responsible for supplying renewable electricity to support the onshore power infrastructure. My gratitude goes out to everyone involved in this project - our engineers, technicians, partners and local stakeholders. Collaborating with 𝐋𝐍𝐆 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐫 𝐋𝐍𝐆, the port facilitated the 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩-𝐭𝐨-𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐛𝐮𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 of 326 cubic meters of LNG onto the 170-meter-long CMA CGM 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐀𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐫𝐚 𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 𝟗.
