In the 1980s and 1990s, dozens of Scotch Whisky Distilleries closed their doors. Some, like The Imperial, for ever. Lots were demolished.
The Casks of the Scotch Whisky they made, they didn't get demolished, somebody bought the. Who this 'somebody' is, is just one of the many Scotch Whisky Secrets. There are rather a lot of them.
The complex story of 'who owns what Cask' is extremely complicated and I won't go into it, here. Mainly, because I don't know. Nobody does!
What Casks are left? Geographically, where are these Casks? How many Casks are there, all over Scotland? To be Scotch it HAS to be in Scotland.
Suffice to say, the 'Scotch Cask Transfer' saga of 'who owns what' makes the 'who pays the wages of a Loanee Professional Footballer?' look relatively straightforward.
What IS clear though is that the 'Old and Rare' aspect of Scotch Whisky is absolutely huge.
Nobody's prepared to say HOW huge.
Because nobody knows.

#Cask88 is incredibly proud to announce that our 1998 single cask bottling, “The Bothy”, from the lost Imperial distillery, has been awarded a remarkable 98/100, an Outstanding Gold Medal at the illustrious International Wine & Spirits Competition, beating off hundreds of competitors to achieve one of the highest scores possible this year.
The Imperial Distillery is a fabled, "ghost" distillery after closing its doors in 1998, to eventually be demolished in 2013 for the new Dalmunach distillery - established in 2015.
This elegant, bright, and exceptional whisky is a true testament to Speyside whisky, and we were blessed to have one of the last ever casks from this fantastic distillery.

30/05/2024, R 1454/2022‑5, PriSecco / ‘Prosecco’
"The Boards of Appeal fully endorses the Cancellation Division’s reasoning and conclusion that the contested EUTM ‘PriSecco’ will evoke the PDO ‘Prosecco’ in the mind of the average consumer throughout the EU. Bearing in mind the high visual and aural similarity between the signs and the notable proximity between the wines of the earlier PDO and the non-alcoholic (apple or pear cocktails of the contested EUTM, there is a strong likelihood that, for a substantial part of the European public, when confronted with the sign ‘PriSecco’ for the non-alcoholic (apple or pear) cocktails, the image triggered directly in their mind will be that of the product protected by the PDO ‘Prosecco’, namely wine".
Looking at this picture, Cognac neophyte might think that is a nice pick. Cognac lovers might criticise that much better value for money can be found but still the XO fine Champagne is very good. Thus Cognac experts will definitely understand why I have been given those 2 spirits to run my #WSET ETP tasting examination
In what group are you standing ?
Let me know why you think a comparative tasting here is well fitted to a #WSET3 in spirits ?

Last month saw the release of Sassicaia's 2021 vintage on the primary market.
Sassicaia is considered by many as the original Super Tuscan with its first vintage being bottled in 1945. In 1968, the great Giacomo Tachis took Sassicaia to new levels, adding noble Bordeaux grapes to the blend which culminated in Sassicaia winning Decanter's "Great Claret" award in 1972.
Since 1972, Sassicaia and the Super Tuscan style has grown in global demand. The release of the 2021 Sassiciaia marks one of its best ever vintages. Critic scores include, 100 points by Wine Advocate, one of only three vintages to achieve this score and 98+ from Anotonio Galloni, his highest Sassicaia score ever.
The 2021 release is a case study in appropriate primary market pricing. Since the release price of £1250.00 per case of six, secondary market pricing has increased to £1650.00 in a number of weeks. This is in comparison to the recent primary market trend with release pricing allowing little room for price appreciation in the short to mid term.
The 2021 Sassicaia has at least a 30 year drinking window which bodes well when we compare it to the previous two 100 point vintages, the 2016 (£1850.00 per 6) and the 1985 (circa £15,000 per 6).

Sullivans Cove introduces Australia’s oldest single cask whisky to the market: Sullivans Cove Distillery adds another layer to its legacy with the release of its 24-year-old single cask spirit. The award-winning Tasmanian distillery recently announced the limited run of the HH0004. With it comes an expression that not only surpasses the brand’s 22-year-old record-breaking blend, but also exudes newer levels of depth and complexity in flavor.
The distillery’s understanding of long-term maturation in full-sized casks is highlighted here. Conceived during Sullivans Cove’s fifth year of operation, HH0004 spent the past 24 years slowly maturing in their bond store. Sullivans Cove’s sensory panel would end up tasting the expression a total of 19 times in the past three years alone to ensure that it has reached its true potential.

Proud whisky enthusiast. Corporate & private functions, utilising the joys of whisky to connect people & have fun. A business coach / mentor, that gets you curious again by changing mindsets of decision makers.
Blind whisky tasting events are amazing fun.
The chances of you guessing what is what or even matching up the clues are remote.
And yet, you see people becoming besties with the person sitting next to them, having never met them previously. You see the conversation wandering from the Rolling Stones through to exhibitions through to .......well, everything but politics.
Last Thursday, I put out 5 excellent drams, which people had to guess:
1) The highly underrated organic barley offering from Benromach Distillery & Malt Whisky Centre
2) Arran's ever faithful and brilliant value 10 year old. Did you know that the bottle has braille on it?
3) Loch Lomond's fruity 12 year old.
4) Amrut's Fusion. 50% and comes with 97 points from Jim Murray's Whisky guide!
But, it was the fifth and final dram that captured the votes of all participating.
The Apex line from the Milk and Honey Distillery in Tel Aviv has a 56.2% ABV bottling, partially matured at the Dead Sea. It spends 18 months near a kibbutz in the region, where the Angel's Share reaches 25%. However, this quickening of the process may mean that it loses any obvious influence of the primarily bourbon casks.
The cask is then transferred back to the Tel Aviv area, where the evaporation levels are reduced by around 50%.
The result is confusing, yet delightful. The fruits on the palate rush through the seasons. Sometimes, orchard fruits. Sometimes, summer or berry fruits. And the spices waver from nutmeg to pepper and beyond.
Beautiful stuff.
Interested in learning more? Next week, we are in Ashdod with 3 top Japanese offerings taking on two bottlings from Scotland's premier distillery.
Pls join us.
