Recently, I had the privilege of attending a 2 Day Government Contracting HUB Conference that left a profound impact on me. This event brought together nearly every Texas state agency, procurement officers, prime and subcontractors, all gathering to network and collaborate. Among the valuable information shared was about the Historically Underutilized Business Program (HUB), a state-based initiative designed to support minority, women, and service-disabled veteran-owned businesses in securing state contracts.
The HUB program's primary objective is to increase the number of awards and provide opportunities to businesses such as the categorized groups I just mentioned. 🫣One HUB Coordinator mentioned one of her biggest concerns is that it's not enough of the categorized groups participating. They miss out on being awarded state contracts because they don't bid. Some are unaware that government contracts are right in their back yards state, city and counties. 😒
Every state has one or more program. Each program such as HUB or SBE, DBE, or MBE aims to create opportunities for miniority, women, or veteran-owned businesses to thrive within the state's procurement network. It's essential for interested businesses to check with their respective state's HUB or look into other state programs to understand the specific qualifications required, as these may vary from state to state. 🏛
One of the highlights of the conference was the Spot Bid Fair & HUB Expo held at the Irving Convention Center in Irving, Texas. This annual event serves as a crucial platform for state of Texas agencies and contractors to connect, exchange information, and learn about upcoming state procurement opportunities. Notably, at last year's spot bid conference, contracts totaling $3.9 million were awarded to attendees from minority, women, and veteran-owned businesses who attended the event. Their motto, We Do business Texas Style. 🇨🇱 #award #contracts #onthespot
For budding entrepreneurs seeking to venture into government contracting, events like the Spot Bid Fair provide a golden opportunity to engage with HUB coordinators, state government agencies, the Small Business Administration (SBA), Procurement Technical Assistance Centers (PTAC), discuss subcontracting goals and strategies, and benefit from mentorship programs.
The HUB office has set ambitious goals to allocate a significant percentage of contracts to HUB-certified businesses across various sectors, including heavy construction, building construction, special trades, professional services, other services, and commodities.
It is crucial for businesses to leverage platforms like the HUB program and events such as the Spot Bid Fair to expand their network, foster collaborations, and propel their businesses towards success.
Remember: network, network, network.
