The evolution of shipping Fuel to Sustainability.
The evolution of shipping fuel, from its sustainable origins through various phases of coal and oil to the current quest for environmentally conscious alternatives, exemplifies the industry’s transformative journey. In our first blog post, Luke O'Connell, Engineer and ShipFuel-IE Project Manager, delves into the history of shipping fuel, its transition towards sustainability and the opportunities and challenges faced by the industry. Read Luke's article here - https://lnkd.in/eB5RAmUm As environmental concerns intensify, the shipping sector faces a pivotal moment to redefine its relationship with fuel. The innovative ShipFuel-IE research project is set to position Ireland at the helm of maritime sustainability by developing a clear path to support the transformation of the shipping sector’s reliance on traditional fuels to low-carbon alternatives. ShipFuel-IE is led by MaREI, the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine at University College Cork in collaboration with renewable energy consultants Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions (GDG), a Venterra Group company. If you want something to move, it helps to give it a little nudge. But when it is the aviation sector’s green transition that you want to get rolling, a little more than that is needed 🛫 What exactly? One of Scandinavia's largest factories that produces synthetic and sustainable aviation fuel using power from wind turbines and solar panels. Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) is behind the project, which is called Fjord PtX, because of its location close to the Limfjord in Northern Jutland, Denmark. Here, the PtX plant will utilize renewable energy and CO₂ from a nearby waste incineration to produce green aviation fuel. We are responsible for planning the project and handling all regulatory processes, including the implementation of environmental and nature surveys and the application for the necessary permits. It is expected that all permits are in place, and construction can begin in 2026. Annually, the future plant is expected to be able to produce up to 110 million litres of aviation fuel, which will be more than enough to cover the annual domestic flights in Denmark, which currently consume 30 million litres of fuel. But the plant will not only deliver the first drops of green aviation fuel to Danish aviation. The factory will also produce a range of sustainable by-products for other sectors. ♻️ 𝐒𝐔𝐄𝐙 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐕𝐚𝐮𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐁𝐈𝐎𝐒𝐘𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐆𝐘 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞'𝐬 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 SUEZ and Vauban Infrastructure Partners, alongside the Normandy region and ADEME, have inaugurated the BIOSYNERGY plant in Le Havre, France. This cutting-edge facility converts 90,000 tons of non-recyclable waste, wood waste, and SRF into 300,000 MWh of renewable energy annually, enough to heat 24,000 homes and support local manufacturers. By reducing landfill use and avoiding 50,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year, BIOSYNERGY aligns with France's Energy Transition for Green Growth Act and its 2050 carbon neutrality target. The SRF fuel is prepared locally at SUEZ’s TriNergy site in Rogerville, exemplifying circular economy principles. “This flagship project showcases how we can create value from waste for the benefit of the region and its people,” said Sabrina Soussan, CEO of SUEZ. Vauban Infrastructure Partners echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of public-private cooperation in advancing sustainability initiatives. BIOSYNERGY marks a significant step in Normandy's energy transition, reducing reliance on fossil fuels while promoting local solutions for a greener future.
