Design vs. PM: The one-way street stopping innovation Ever heard this gem: "Designers are great at making things pretty, but they can't understand the real business needs"? Yeah, me too. Wrong. So. Wrong. It cuts design's potential and creates a vicious cycle. It uses designer capability and reduces them to pixels. This attitude isn't just insulting, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. Companies that undervalue design end up with designers who can't fulfill their true potential. - Design isn't just about pixels - Designers don't paint by numbers - Designers are creative problem solvers - It's not always about simply adding new features We might not work in spreadsheets all day, but it doesn't mean we can't think strategically. It's a broken design system: - Design leadership isn't truly empowered - Companies don't invest in design properly - They don't involve design in the decision-making This creates a one-way street, stifling design's strategic voice. Design-led companies operate differently: - They attract and empower A-players. - Designers are in the room from the start. - Designers break down silos with their expertise. - Design shapes the roadmap, not just builds features. - Designers become strategic partners, not order-takers. - Design helps drive strategy, not the other way around. The question isn't "Can designers do PM tasks?" It's "Are you empowering them to?" It should never be them vs us. It should be a strategic partnership between leadership, PMs, development and designers. What are your thoughts? Have you seen this attitude firsthand? #DesignThinking #DesignLeadership #ProductManagement #Empowerment #uxdesign #designcareer

Leadership is about nurturing and creating a positive environment for every career type, and for product designers, it's especially crucial. The nature of design work inherently requires a supportive atmosphere, as it affects many aspects of their output. Design, in general, is a very sensitive profession. While this might seem stereotypical 👀 it's true that designers thrive in positive spaces where they can freely create and empathize with users. Product designers are no different; they need a nurturing work environment to craft solutions that genuinely meet user needs. When designers are pressured to make decisions based on fear of leadership reactions or merely conforming to what leadership deems right, they lose the ability to empathize with users. This leads to misguided design choices that can harm the overall product quality. I’ve experienced firsthand how the right environment can transform a design team's output. At Lemoni Lab, we make it our priority to create a supportive, positive space for our product designers! Which was reflected on their performance 💪 💪 💪 #Leadership #ProductDesign #PositiveWorkEnvironment #DesignThinking #EmpathyInDesign #Lemonilab

How do you improve the level of craft in your design org? It can be tough to maintain a high level of craft as design orgs grow. If you find yourself wondering if the current level of craft is good enough, it probably isn’t. Luckily, there are still things you can do to turn it around. It’s going to take a lot of time and effort, but it will also have huge payoffs. Five key reasons why design quality plummets: 1. Pressure to Deliver Fast A lack of proper planning leads to tight deadlines that leads to rushed work. This usually means sacrificing attention to detail, and those details matter more than you think. 2. Shifting Priorities As companies scale, the focus can shift too much towards efficiency and profitability, forcing Design into a service model. It’s hard to argue for a high quality bar if you loose a seat at the table. 3. Lack of Strong Design Leadership Strong design leaders are champions of quality and high standards. They make it a priority, but without them, teams can struggle to defend design excellence against fast work that is “good enough”. 4. Design by Committee Too many voices influencing design decisions will almost always lead to compromised design quality because no one can hear anyone else. 5. Burnout Pressure to deliver plus shifting priorities plus a lack of leadership will ultimately lead to designer burnout. It’s hard to care about craft when you struggling to make it through the day. How do you fix it? Set the Bar Work with your team to establish and enforce high standards for design work. Share this with cross-functional partners and be clear that ensuring quality is non-negotiable, even under tight deadlines. Incorporate Regular Design Reviews Take those new standards and implement a structured process for regular design reviews that focus on craft. Involve senior designers, experts, and leadership who can provide constructive feedback. Do this consistently and often. Plan for the Future Work with cross-functional partners to create roadmaps and plan for future design sprints. Monitor your time and experiment with any mechanism that gets you and your team in front of the next wave of work. This will give you the time you need to push back on quality. Even if you can’t force your partners to be organized, getting your own house in order will put pressure on others to do the same. Those are a few first steps to improving craft. What else have you done to make things better? #design #designleadership

Design on product teams is sometimes made to feel optional, in both early-stage teams rushing to launch and in established teams relying on design systems to do the heavy lifting. It’s easy to assume that with a solid system in place, design’s role diminishes. That’s when designers become even more critical. They go beyond adhering to patterns, ensuring those patterns evolve with user needs, business goals, and real-world feedback. The best designers aren’t about ego or standing out. They focus on fitting in, solving problems collaboratively, and ensuring the product thrives without calling attention to the work itself. How has design made a difference on your team?

🧠#KnowledgeMonday Hello everyone 👋👋 Trust you are as pumped as we are for this week 🥳🥳 As we wind up on our current book read, today we are looking at embracing lateral design. Lateral design is more than just a buzzword—it's a mindset that fosters collaboration and creativity across disciplines. In a world where silos often hinder innovation, lateral design breaks down barriers and brings together designers, engineers, product managers, and more to create truly user-centric products. Rightly said "Organizational design influences product design significantly. If the relationship between the people who make a product is broken, the product will be broken too." Do you want to learn more about lateral design and how it can be a game changer in building better teams and products? Check out our medium article noww! Now In Design 🔵🟣 - Let's talk about 'Good Design' Ever found yourself in a design review where ‘good’ felt like an opinion rather than a standard? 🎯 Defining what ‘good design’ means for your project or team isn’t just helpful—it’s essential. Without it, you risk misaligned expectations, endless back-and-forths, and designs that don’t quite hit the mark for users or the business. Here’s why it matters: 1️⃣ Alignment: A shared definition keeps everyone on the same page—from stakeholders to designers. It ensures feedback is tied to the goals of the project, not personal preferences. 2️⃣ Efficiency: With clarity around expectations, your team spends less time debating and more time creating. When you know the target, it’s easier to hit it. 3️⃣ Empowerment: A clear understanding of ‘good’ gives designers—especially junior ones—the confidence to make decisions. They can focus on doing their best work without second-guessing themselves. Remember, 'good' isn’t a one size fits all and sometimes it’s about speed, other times it’s about deep diving. The key is setting the right expectations upfront with clear frameworks and healthy critique sessions. #UXDesign #DesignLeadership #GoodDesign #TeamAlignment #NowInDesign #Team #Good #ProductDesign

The BEST Design lesson you’ll receive today: (From someone who’s turning passion into purpose and thriving along the way) Someone once asked me: “How can I solve all the problems in this project?” My answer? Design Thinking. Because design thinking isn’t just a methodology: it’s a mindset that transforms how we solve problems. Here’s how: 📍 Start by asking the right questions. The foundation of good design is understanding the needs of those who will interact with it. Great design begins with understanding. Always ask: - Who are we designing for, and what do they need? - How can this design solve real problems and improve lives? For instance, when I worked on a project integrating student dorms and a cultural center in the same area, the challenge was creating two distinct spaces that could communicate without being directly connected. By asking the right questions, I focused on the movement of users, shared experiences, and adaptive layouts to design environments that complemented each other: Fostering both individuality and a sense of connection. 📍 Embrace the process of iteration. Design is about progression, not perfection. It’s about experimenting, failing, learning, and improving. Prototype, refine, and repeat. You'll find better solutions that exceed expectations by continually analyzing your work and testing new ideas. 📍 Design with purpose and empathy. Every design decision should come from a place of empathy. I'd like you to focus on how your designs can create meaningful experiences that are sustainable, user-friendly, and impactful. This mindset allows your work to connect with people on a deeper level, creating lasting value. ✨ In a world where everyone wants to take, give. Design thinking is about generosity: It’s about contributing your creativity to build a better world It's not just about what you create. It’s about the positive change you bring to others. To sum it up: Design thinking is about giving: your creativity, time, and energy to create positive change. The journey never stops: keep designing, keep improving, and let’s create something that matters. 💬 What’s the best design lesson you've learned so far? I’d love to hear how you’re applying this approach to make an impact. Let’s unlock the power of creative problem-solving together! #DesignThinking #CreativeProcess #Innovation #Architecture #ProblemSolving #DesignForImpact
