Last week, I had the pleasure to attend the Service Design Global Conference in Helsinki #SDGC24. This year’s theme highlighted the power of service design in driving strategic business impact. Below are some key insights I found valuable. 💥 Service Design: Beyond Aesthetics and Customer Experience Traditionally associated with aesthetics and customer experience, service design is evolving to play a strategic role within organisations. Andreas Pattichis, Design Director & Partner at Hellon Ltd, presented on "Debunking the Myth: The Tangible Impact of Service Design", showcasing how service design creates measurable business outcomes, debunking the notion that it's limited to superficial improvements. 💥 Integrating Design into Strategy Service design is becoming a strategic imperative for organisations. OP Financial Group’s presentation on "The Rise of Strategic Design" demonstrated how they’ve integrated strategic designers into their strategy processes, emphasizing the growing role of design thinking in top-level decision-making. 💥 Fostering Design Maturity Organizations that embrace design across all levels unlock greater innovation and impact. Nina Hirvonen, DesignOps Lead at OP Financial Group, presented on "Growing Design Maturity and Creating Impact through Design", offering insights on building a design-mature culture that supports innovation. 💥 Leveraging Service Design for Foresight Service design methodologies can be used to develop foresight tools for anticipating future trends. Satu Miettinen (She/Her), Professor of Service Design, presented "Service Designing a Foresight Tool for Strategic Leadership," providing examples of how service design can enhance strategic foresight. 💥 Embracing the "Waves of Change" Three key "waves of change" were highlighted at the conference: moving from rigid to flexible processes, focusing on action over reporting, and fostering collaboration across disciplines. Leaders who embrace these shifts can create more agile and impactful organizations. Hellon Ltd's presentation advocated for a more adaptable, action-oriented approach to service design. 💥 Strategic Design: A Dedicated Approach The emergence of strategic design as a discipline underscores service design’s power to drive business success. OP Financial Group exemplifies this by integrating strategic designers into both the preparation and implementation of their strategic choices.

Design vs. PM: The one-way street stopping innovation Ever heard this gem: "Designers are great at making things pretty, but they can't understand the real business needs"? Yeah, me too. Wrong. So. Wrong. It cuts design's potential and creates a vicious cycle. It uses designer capability and reduces them to pixels. This attitude isn't just insulting, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. Companies that undervalue design end up with designers who can't fulfill their true potential. - Design isn't just about pixels - Designers don't paint by numbers - Designers are creative problem solvers - It's not always about simply adding new features We might not work in spreadsheets all day, but it doesn't mean we can't think strategically. It's a broken design system: - Design leadership isn't truly empowered - Companies don't invest in design properly - They don't involve design in the decision-making This creates a one-way street, stifling design's strategic voice. Design-led companies operate differently: - They attract and empower A-players. - Designers are in the room from the start. - Designers break down silos with their expertise. - Design shapes the roadmap, not just builds features. - Designers become strategic partners, not order-takers. - Design helps drive strategy, not the other way around. The question isn't "Can designers do PM tasks?" It's "Are you empowering them to?" It should never be them vs us. It should be a strategic partnership between leadership, PMs, development and designers. What are your thoughts? Have you seen this attitude firsthand? #DesignThinking #DesignLeadership #ProductManagement #Empowerment #uxdesign #designcareer

Recently I had to think through how to introduce the highlights of design, #design thinking, #service / #experience design and design-led #innovation to someone who wasn’t familiar with them. I introduced a few key points, principles and methods that came to mind. In summary, they were: 1) The power of pausing to explore problems before solutions. For example, using ethnography to unearth the insight that people did not understand triage or where they were in it - providing a laser-sharp problem #reframing for reducing violence in A&E. 2) Using a radar chart to map #stakeholders - both direct and obvious as well as those less obvious and indirectly associated to the task. For example, a recent workshop where identifying a particular stakeholder job title - and what motivated them - allowed the team to think far more ‘outside-in’. 3) How #journey maps allow us to see experience in a linear, time-based form which unlocks new ways of ideating for colleagues and customers alike. For example, shifting meals from BA's long-haul flat-bed business class to the lounges, allowing passengers kitchen-cooked meals and more sleep whilst reducing weight (fuel burn) and waste on board. A change that transcended many departments and complexities, but looks simple when seen from a customer POV. We also walked through the different types of design (interior, service, product, digital) as well as the levels as which design might play: C-suite and strategic to junior management and incremental improvement. These principles and methods - and more - are incredibly adaptive to most sectors. So how might some of these approaches help your organisation with its challenges? Get in touch for a chat and a coffee.

How do you design a product to serve 20+ countries? 🌎 Rolling out products to multiple countries is not easy. I’ve had the opportunity to work with product teams tackling these challenges. Honestly, is not always trivial - you feel on a rollercoaster of successes & frustrations. Designing at scale is not only about translation. Is much (MUCH) more than that. Is about the the cultural nuances, commonalities across regions, local-specific needs, tradeoffs on regional prioritization, and keeping your discovery efforts across multiple types of customers. You need to design locally while thinking globally. But where do you start? Through my experience, I’ve noticed some common trends that - when you have the discipline to adopt them - will increase your chances of success: ✔️Start with solid design principles or tenets that support your decision-making ✔️Pay closer attention to the early architectural decisions for scale & flexibility ✔️Build a strong case regionally, and expand from there ✔️Master prioritization at scale through clear decision criteria considering local & common needs ✔️Keep clarity on feature coverage & availability and reduce parity gaps ✔️Use consistent mechanisms to connect frequently with regional customers ✔️Embrace cross-cultural design ensuring local needs are covered ✔️Build a strong process to validate when a feature should become core across regions I would probably add to the list: stay curious - look for the connecting points and behavioral trends across customers. Experiment more. Global design should not neglect the essence of any product: keeping customers at the center of your design. Ps: what else i’m missing on the list?

This post ties on to the previous one about empathy and examines a second power of Design Thinking: the way it taps into the wisdom and creativity of the collective. (𝟮) 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 You can apply Design Thinking just to yourself and your own life - and you will see benefits from it. However, when a well-functioning group of human beings get together then something truly magic can happen. You may have experienced it in your private life. You may have been in the company of just the right people at the right time, and together, you birthed and shaped an idea that took you all by surprise. It could have been with a group of friends, or colleagues - where in that moment, you all seemed to connect with one another in a special way and started building on the ideas of each other. In that moment, you all defer judgment (you knew you could always assess feasibility and viability later), you all opened wide and saw the idea gradually evolve in front of your eyes. One thing led to the next in a '𝘠𝘦𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 ...' sort of a way. Almost as if you were gently passing a bouncy magic air balloon through the air. Each time someone took and held the idea, they changed its shape slightly, they added something to it, they fleshed out something that was previously blank. As the idea was being crafted and nurtured in this way, everyone could see its contours becoming clearer, its details becoming more nuanced. Together, you brought an idea to life until it was vivid and compelling (or crazy and wild), and could be seen and felt. And you did that by temporarily suspending disbelief, by adding to (rather than taking away from), by expanding (rather than contracting), by delighting in the act of creation. At the end, something was produced that would have been unlikely to surface, had any of the individuals tried to come up with it on their own. This is the power of the collective. It's not unique to Design Thinking, of course. We all know how fun and productive it can be to work in well-functioning teams. But Design Thinking has woven this power into its fabric and made the most of it - and perhaps nowhere more clearly than in its 'Ideate' phase. Now, great ideas are well and good. - And not every ideation will produce a 'great' idea. Sometimes the value simply lies in mapping out all available ideas. Getting them all onto a board, perhaps clustering them into meaningful categories, seeing relationships between them, weighing them up against one another, assessing them so that the most promising ones may be identified. Whether an idea is 'great' or simply the best among the available, nothing changes until you move into action. In my next post, I'll explore another power of Design Thinking: how it gently (but persistently) moves us from ideas to action.
