Gender | Poverty | Inequality | Data | Policy - Feminist working for more inclusive measurement and evidence, towards a just, equitable, sustainable future
⚡️ Energy that is affordable, accessible and sufficient is critical to individuals surviving and thriving. Unaffordable and unclean energy can have adverse consequences for individuals (including on their health) and communities (including climate change and pollution). And the implications of energy deprivation are gendered.
🌍 Most obviously, in most parts of the world, women and girls spend most time cooking in households, and so are most affected by fumes from cooking with unclean fuel. They have most to gain from improved access to clean affordable energy to the home, in terms of health and time use.
👍 So, it is very good to see that gender equality is increasingly integrated in Official Development Assistance for the energy sector, especially in energy generation from renewable sources, energy policy, and energy distribution.
However, this increase is coming from a low base.
As the new Development Finance for Gender Equality 2024 report (https://oe.cd/5PJ) shows, the energy sector overall is still among the worst performers in terms of inclusion of gender equality objectives. The figures below show that only 30% of Official Development Assistance going to energy includes a gender equality objective, compared to the average for ODA as a whole of 42%.
There is an urgent need to do better in taking account of different work, roles, responsibilities, barriers and opportunities in determining priorities and implementing energy investments. And ensure that the perspectives and priorities of women help determine priorities and approaches.
This needs governments to have and use systems and processes that require all actors to understand contexts and lived realities and engage with those that will be affected by investments – from an effectiveness, efficiency and rights perspective.

Development Co-operation and Gender Equality - Views are my own.
🚀 The energy sector is powering up for change! 🚀
🌍 Gender equality is increasingly integrated in official development assistance for the energy sector, especially in the areas of energy generation from renewable sources, energy policy, and energy distribution.
💫The stronger focus on gender equality in new programmes related to clean energy reflects a recognition by OECD DAC members of the importance of a just energy transition - one that ensures clean energy benefits everyone.
📊 At the same time, aid for the energy sector more broadly remains one of the sectors with the lowest inclusion of gender equality objectives, at 30%.
📌 There is an urgent need to step up efforts to empower women, whose voices and expertise are essential for shaping a sustainable energy future.
💡 DAC members should continue this positive path and accelerate their efforts to support women’s empowerment in this sector.
