Both agree and disagree: #MBA is never about the skills. You can learn everything off YouTube, free courses… and yes, experience. A #balancesheet, #incomestatement, or pro forma are a walk in the park compared to calculating life saving medications infusions as your patient is coding/crashing in the #emergencydepartment or calculation of multiple #nutrition components for a premature neonate in the #NICU. I’m always amused when MBA types think doctors can’t do #math. Also, calories in & calories out, fluid in & fluid out, sodium in & sodium out: that is a balance sheet, essentially. Now just substitute money in the equations. As a Chief Medical Officer I was told I spoke like someone who had an MBA (I did not have one then, but I had co-authored a $1.8 billion payment reform). So why did I get an MBA? I chose the robust Massachusetts Institute of Technology #entrepreneurship ecosystem. I did every single incubator, accelerator, action learning opportunity. I got tons and tons of feedback that normally would require paying advisors in cash or equity. I learned how to pitch a full and compelling business idea in 90 seconds and 2 slides. I went to tons of #AI events and pitches. I developed a cross-sector network where I can get advice on anything from term sheets, legal, supply chain, or tech stack within hours, even minutes. I get to go to invite-only events at #VC firms reserved for select entrepreneurs. I get closer to being in the <2% of female founders who get funded. To that end I also did the Stanford University Graduate School of Business LEAD program Via Stanford University, I cultivated Silicon Valley contacts and name recognition with West Coast VC. I also did a deep dive into #design and #design thinking at Stanford. I get asked all the time, should I do this or that degree, certificate, program. You have to define your goals. How will something give you skills, experiences, or network? Only when you know your target can you calculate the ROI for yourself.

I told another doctor not to get their MBA. After conversation, it was clear that they didn’t need it. They had the skills. We (especially clinicians) so often want to… Get another degree. Read another book. Take another course. Validate our ideas. When we really just need to start. Often, it’s hard for clinicians to get started because we once needed a degree or certification to do what we do. It’s not true outside of clinical work. Just start. Learn as you go.

Sharing this because I know some of my peers need to hear it as much as I did! Too often, we feel the need for external (and internal!) validation to justify our ideas. Personally, I've struggled with thinking I needed: - One more certification, - One more book, or - One more class... ...before I'd be "ready" for the next level. But letting go of the need for validation is empowering - it allows us to step into our role as someone who sparks meaningful, lasting change, not just quick fixes. A shoutout to Andrew Lundquist for the comment that stuck with me about shifting from the 'just fix it' mentality to influencing ideas until they gain traction." That hit home. As a clinician (and just my personality), I tend to process quickly and jump to action before others are ready. Now, I have a sticky note to remind me: "Influence ideas, don't push ideas."

We are excited to announce our workshop at the 'Core Competencies in CME/CPD' session during the 17th European CME Forum in Madrid. Don't settle for picking a date, a venue, the speakers, the format, the travel arrangements, the dinner, and the preferred content ... before defining what it's all for. Don't waste the valuable time of your healthcare professionals with activities that are 'pleasant in the moment but lack long-term substance'. In a world of forward planning, it's crucial to focus on learning outcomes and how to measure their achievement before setting all the details. Just like we wouldn't build a house without a blueprint, we shouldn't plan learning without clear goals in mind. Join us at the workshop to explore this concept further. There's still time to sign up for #17ECF. #CME #CPD #MedEd https://lnkd.in/eBHTEW2e
