Major iGaming conference SiGMA has once again generated a wave of complaints as the 27,000 attendees descending on Marsa bring traffic in Malta’s central areas to a standstill, with some writing of travel times up to two and a half hours to get to work. Opposition Leader Bernard Grech also weighed in on the issue, calling out the lack of planning that wastes people’s time and undermines investment. However, SiGMA employees and attendees – and perhaps a fake profile or two – have not been shy about hitting back, writing about the “incredible opportunities” the conference brings to the islands and pointing out that restaurants, bars, hotels and taxis all benefit from the activity it attracts in an otherwise relatively quiet month. SiGMA’s head of sales encouraged the hundreds of complainers commenting below a Times of Malta report on the gridlock traffic to be “more open minded” about what SiGMA brings to Malta, while the firm’s events manager described the economic impact of the conference as “insane”. “The amount of business generated in just a couple of days is more than the country sees over much longer periods of time,” she wrote, adding that the event “puts Malta on the map and brings people from all over the world.” SiGMA’s creative manager also chimed in, saying that although “Malta is a small island, SiGMA makes it shine on the global stage.” She also noted the “100+ directional signs for taxis, coaches and ferries” that made getting to the event “easy and organised” – a comment that predictably drew opprobrium and outright insults in response. Yet another SiGMA employee, a sales manager, made the economic case for the conference quite simply: “Traffic might be bad, but 27,000 people needing a place to eat, drink, lodging … economy goes up.” Perhaps in anticipation of the backlash the event would likely generate – going off last year’s organisation, which had a similar response from the general public – SiGMA released a statement on Monday saying that the conference drives a €100 million boost to Malta’s tourism economy – approximately 3.3 per cent of the total. #WhosWho #Malta #Traffic #Sigma

PRAGUE – MTLG Destination Update 2024 Five great reasons to organise an event in Prague: 1. Layers of history Prague has layers of rich history, its churches and buildings dating centuries back. Organising an event in Prague means immersing attendees in original stories entwined with Slavic history and culture. The city’s landmarks join to create a unique backdrop for events. 2. Diversity of meeting venues From boutique to luxurious and from Art-Noveau to modernist, Prague’s meeting venues and hotels cater to any taste. Most dot the old town and offer impressive views of bridges and the Prague Castle. Choose wisely! 3. Price-performance Even though in high season, the prices skyrocket, most hotels are still comparably cheaper to hotels in European capitals. Besides, the prices for food and the omnipresent pilsner are very affordable. 4. International hub Prague is in the heart of Central Europe and, for many Westerners, an introduction to Eastern Europe. In that respect, Prague is a welcoming and safe melting pot, home to some 170,000 students. As established as it is, the Czech capital meets every expectation event organisers have of an international metropolis. 5. Beer capital of the world Czechs are immensely proud of their brewing heritage. Beer is more than a refreshing beverage in Prague and can act as the glue between event attendees as they explore local traditions. Czechs are also head and shoulders above others according to beer consumption per capita at 140 litres annually. I’ve just returned from spending time with our Turkish customers in Istanbul and this is what I’ve learned…🇹🇷🕌🙌 Turkey’s unique charm lies not only in its history and architecture but also in the open-mindedness of its people. During my visit, I had the chance to meet with Turkish businessmen who were eager to discuss new opportunities, and even the ordinary people I encountered in restaurants and on the streets were warm and welcoming. 🍴😊 And the food — simply delicious. From kebabs to lamb and beef dishes, everything was full of flavor. One thing that stood out to me was how safe I felt. Despite going out at night, I never had to worry about my personal security. It’s a city that allows you to explore freely without concern. The culture is equally impressive. Tea — mostly black tea ☕️ — is a staple of daily life, and I found it refreshing that alcohol isn’t prevalent in public spaces — there are almost no drunk people on the streets. 🥃🙅♂️ And as someone who enjoys tea myself, this cultural habit was something I could relate to. From a business perspective, I see huge potential for collaboration between Turkey and China, even though barriers like tariffs do exist. My experience with Turkish customers has taught me some valuable lessons, particularly about communication and relationship-building. Doing business in Turkey is, of course, different from doing business in places like China, the U.S., or Mexico. Each market has its own conditions, customer preferences, and economic environment. In other words… Success comes from understanding these local distinctions. There is no one-size-fits-all approach — everything, from product design to marketing strategies and pricing models, must be tailored to the specific market. Turkey itself is a fascinating blend of tradition and innovation. Many businesses are rooted in long-established practices and values, while at the same time, there’s a growing push toward adopting new technologies and embracing global thinking. This balance between tradition and modernity is something we can all learn from — it shows the importance of respecting cultural heritage while being open to change in a global economy that thrives on innovation. 🚀 Video Credit: Davy Shi Content Copyright: Davy Shi #Business #Learning #Culture
