Last night I joined Sarah-Jane Mee on Sky for their 1 hour Grenfell special. My segment is 31:25-40:05 on the player. I was asked for thoughts on the Grenfell 2 report and recommendations etc. Overarching thoughts on all of this. 1. How amazing the Grenfell community are to have endured this level of sustained scrutiny and lack of justice for over 7 years. 2. Why oh why are we not enforcing the building safety laws and regulations that already exist? 3. Why are the Building Safety Regulator as an organisation and the Chief Inspector of Buildings as an individual so quiet? Is it not their job to reassure the public and ensure industry behavioural change? Specific points included: 1. 'ploddy ploddy government response' to Grenfell and the Building Safety Crisis 2. Government numbers under reported due to <11m excluded. 3. Government should have preempted the inquiry recommendations and got on with implementation 4. Fire College recommendation in report (we had one until it was sold off) 5. Building Safety Regulator is 'struggling to operationalise' 6. Affirmed my support for private enterprise in the supply chain subject to effective regulation 7. Enforcement - 'we are good at creating rules but we're poor at enforcing them' leads to a 'culture of contempt' 8. Transparency of information required - as per the regulations that already exist 9. Enforcement authorities need to be properly funded.
