This simple truth holds immense power, especially in healthcare, where even the best professionals are often limited by flawed systems. In the early 2000s, Virginia Mason faced a series of patient safety issues, including a high number of preventable errors. Leaders decided to adopt a quality improvement approach inspired by Deming's teachings, incorporating many concepts of the Toyota Production System, which Deming helped develop in Japan. They began by mapping out their processes, identifying inefficiencies, and restructuring workflows to eliminate bottlenecks and reduce error rates. Virginia Mason implemented systems such as standardized workflows, error-proofing procedures, and non-punitive error reporting. For example, they introduced the “patient safety alert system,” empowering any staff member to stop a process if they identified a potential safety concern. This shift from a fear-based culture to one focused on continuous improvement and system accountability led to a significant reduction in patient harm and improved efficiency. More than 70% of payers and providers foresee GenAI making the most significant impact on health outcomes and member experiences according to a survey of executive-level leaders at 350 provider and payer organizations. This anticipation underscores their recognition of GenAI's potential to enhance healthcare delivery and patient experiences. However, despite this acknowledgment, only 20% of payers and providers currently integrate a vision for GenAI into their investment decisions. This suggests that while there's growing awareness of GenAI's potential, a majority of payers and providers have yet to take decisive action. Regulating AI can be a double edged sword! “When regulating AI-equipped medical devices, the FDA might take a page from the Department of Transportation’s playbook for overseeing AI-equipped vehicles. These run the gamut from assisting human drivers to fully taking the wheel. This would make particular sense when machine learning in medical software can make the products ever “smarter” over time.
