"A bad system will beat a good person every time." Edward Deming, the father of quality improvement, taught us a profound lesson: "A bad system will beat a good person every time." This simple truth holds immense power, especially in healthcare, where even the best professionals are often limited by flawed systems. In the early 2000s, Virginia Mason faced a series of patient safety issues, including a high number of preventable errors. Leaders decided to adopt a quality improvement approach inspired by Deming's teachings, incorporating many concepts of the Toyota Production System, which Deming helped develop in Japan. They began by mapping out their processes, identifying inefficiencies, and restructuring workflows to eliminate bottlenecks and reduce error rates. Virginia Mason implemented systems such as standardized workflows, error-proofing procedures, and non-punitive error reporting. For example, they introduced the “patient safety alert system,” empowering any staff member to stop a process if they identified a potential safety concern. This shift from a fear-based culture to one focused on continuous improvement and system accountability led to a significant reduction in patient harm and improved efficiency. Today, Virginia Mason Medical Center is celebrated as a model for quality improvement in healthcare, demonstrating the profound impact of Deming’s principles on patient safety and operational success. ✨ Here’s how Deming’s principles can reshape healthcare for the better: 🔄 Build a Culture of Continuous Improvement Hospitals can embed improvement cycles (Plan-Do-Check-Act) into daily practices to reduce patient wait times, streamline workflows, and enhance care. 🧩 Focus on Systems, Not Individuals Rather than blaming staff for errors, address systemic issues. For instance, barcode medication administration (BCMA) reduces human error by verifying medications, creating safer outcomes. 🤝 Foster Trust, Not Fear Cultivate a non-punitive reporting system, allowing healthcare professionals to report errors without fear—enabling leaders to address root causes of patient harm proactively. 📊 Use Data to Understand and Manage Variation Analyze patient outcomes to identify systemic issues rather than viewing anomalies as isolated events, thereby creating more targeted interventions. 👥 Break Down Silos and Promote Collaboration Encourage interdisciplinary bedside rounding so all team members understand patient needs, leading to cohesive, effective care. 📚 Empower Through Training Offer ongoing education in both clinical and soft skills. Training in areas like empathy, communication, and digital competency empowers staff to deliver patient-centered care. #QualityImprovement #HealthcareInnovation #EdwardDeming #PatientSafety #HealthcareSystems https://wix.to/ZdxKg9f #newblogpost

More than 70% of payers and providers foresee GenAI making the most significant impact on health outcomes and member experiences according to a survey of executive-level leaders at 350 provider and payer organizations. This anticipation underscores their recognition of GenAI's potential to enhance healthcare delivery and patient experiences. However, despite this acknowledgment, only 20% of payers and providers currently integrate a vision for GenAI into their investment decisions. This suggests that while there's growing awareness of GenAI's potential, a majority of payers and providers have yet to take decisive action. Is this reluctance stemming from uncertainty or a preference to await more concrete results? #AIInHealthcare #GenAI #HealthTech

Regulating AI can be a double edged sword! “When regulating AI-equipped medical devices, the FDA might take a page from the Department of Transportation’s playbook for overseeing AI-equipped vehicles. These run the gamut from assisting human drivers to fully taking the wheel. This would make particular sense when machine learning in medical software can make the products ever “smarter” over time. The recommendation comes from Paragon Health Institute, a D.C.-based think tank focused on promoting innovation while encouraging competition and flagging cuttable costs. “Regulation must protect the incentives for software improvement, including but not limited to feature enhancements and the remediation of known software anomalies that do not impair the system’s safety or effectiveness,” Paragon suggests in a new review of the relevant literature. “Regulators should provide an economical pathway for innovators to re-apply for FDA approval on their devices where the functionality remains the same but system autonomy increases over time.”” MedTech Innovator LSI Heart Rhythm Society American Heart Association American College of Cardiology European Society of Cardiology #epeeps MedTech World MedTech Startup Company Ventures Health Wildcatters Capital Factory HealthTech Arkansas Y Combinator Techstars Techstars Physical Health Fort Worth Accelerator Blackstone Launchpad #HRX2024
