His company, TerraPower's plans for its Natrium reactor project in Wyoming have been delayed by at least two years, due to the inability to obtain high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel from Russia, So, you know he’s not happy. The lack of a domestic commercial HALEU supply chain in the US has been a major roadblock for TerraPower and other advanced reactor developers. Enter ASP Isotopes. ASP Isotopes is an isotope enrichment company that has developed a proprietary technology called the Aerodynamic Separation Process (ASP) over the past two decades. This cutting-edge technology allows them to enrich isotopes of elements or molecules with both low and high atomic masses, which is a capability that traditional enrichment methods like centrifuges cannot achieve. The company's initial focus is on producing and commercializing highly enriched isotopes for the healthcare, technology and nuclear power industries: Molybdenum-100 (Mo-100) - for highly enriched Mo-100, which has the potential to replace the commonly used Mo-99 in diagnostic imaging. Carbon-14 (C-14) - Highly enriched C-14 is the most frequently used radiolabel for drug discovery and pharmacokinetics studies. Silicon-28 (Si-28) - ASP Isotopes has entered into a purchase agreement to supply highly enriched Si-28 to a leading semiconductor manufacturer, as Si-28 is anticipated to enable technologies like quantum computing and artificial intelligence. High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) - The company has created a subsidiary, Quantum Leap Energy LLC, to supply commercial quantities of HALEU for small modular reactors. ASP Isotopes' technology offers several advantages, including low capital costs, a small footprint, modular design for capacity expansion, and zero waste production. The company has completed cold commissioning at its first plant in South Africa and expects to start commercial production in 2024.
