If there's one thing I see often is the lack of planning with the in-house communications department and/or the PR agency yet the expectation is always wanting big ROI. Not going to happen if you lack the foresight to bring your comms/PR partners in early and keep them in the loop often. The big moments take planning and time. If that isn't something you can or are willing to do, might as well stop paying a PR agency. 💁♀️ Thanks for the great read, Mark Pasetsky!

Weekend? In PR, We Call That ‘Client Follow-Up Time’ You know it’s Friday in PR when your inbox becomes a “we-need-this-today” battlefield, and, of course, you’re drafting that press release that somehow always needs to go out just before the weekend. And just when you think you’re in the clear, there it is—that 6 PM Friday email from a client asking you to “just close this by Monday.” Because, why not? Weekends are apparently a myth we tell ourselves, right? 🤷♂️✨ Do PR professionals ever actually get a weekend? Or are we just fooling ourselves while we keep one eye on the inbox, pretending that media follow-ups and client check-ins aren’t a part of our weekend plans? 🎶💻 Maybe one day we’ll crack the code to truly “disconnecting.” Anyone else feeling the Friday hustle? 😅 #PublicRelations #MediaRelations #BrandBuilding #Marketing #PersonalBranding #Storytelling

“FUN” our word for 2024 ✨ Story time: PR wasn’t always fun for me, in fact it used to be the source of my anxiety and insomnia. The agency I worked for was driven by fear and the clients were NEVER satisfied. I’d secure Vogue, Forbes, Insider, Men’s Health…think of a top publication and it was on the client’s report, and the first question I’d get after each feature was “what’s next”? Not a “this is so exciting” NOT a “thank you” NO celebrations, and certainly no “this is so much FUN.” When Bridget Aileen Sicsko and I started VOP we realized how freakin’ FUN, it was to secure press. How EACH PIECE needed to be celebrated. And that each feature should never be dismissed. Press is a build & a journey, and just like our businesses it takes time & should be celebrated! It should be fun! Otherwise, WHAT’S the point!? One of our biggest missions is reframing the need for instant fame & recognition, & to understanding that PR is a journey & a long-term strategy for our brands. There’s no instantaneous quick rocket ship to the top, so why not enjoy it. You’d be surprised what comes from this simple shift!! As well as what doors open for you. P.S. we have our PR Assistant Certification for VAs starting June 5th. Link in the comments to sign up a team member or send to a friend that’s a VA.

Something I'm asked a lot is.... If you should keep PR-ing your business over the summer months when it all feels like it’s gone a bit quiet out there. And in short, my answer is always yes. I've secured at least 5 pieces of press coverage for clients this week (so far) - the media doesn't just stop because it's summer! I totally understand that some of you will be stepping away for a bit, but it's worth carving out time to keep on top of your PR over the summer months for a few reasons: ☀️It goes quieter for journalists - last year I remember chatting to one who said they were getting much less email traffic than normal - big brands don't put on events, there's less activity going on out there, so use this to your advantage. There are lots of opportunities for your business over the summer. ☀️Journalists still need content - yes some will be away for summer breaks but there are still pages to fill and things to be written - and don't forget some of them are working up to four months ahead so will be looking at their New Year/ Winter content. ☀️This is a key time for Christmas issues - If Christmas is important for your biz, most of the monthly mags will be putting together their Christmas pages over the summer, so if you want to be in it to win it, then it's worth keeping an eye on what's going on out there and make sure you're ready to respond to media requests when you see them. ☀️Podcasts are still being recorded, events are still being planned (last summer I booked myself in for two speaking opps) - it might feel like you’re juggling things over the summer but there’s still lots going on out there and it's worth pitching yourself ☀️Planning for A/W is key so you can get ahead of yourself. I'm working with my 1-2-1 clients and DIY PR members to make sure that their strategy is in place so they can hit the ground running come September As always build your business around what works for you, but I recommend keeping a toe in the water and an eye on what’s going on out there so you don’t miss out on opportunities for your biz! Are you keeping on this summer or taking a break?
