Collaboration of public and private enterprises watch on how they are working to tackle costs and emissions

Launched in 2022, UNICEF's TRVST Initiative (Traceability & Verification System) allows countries to verify the authenticity of health products and to track and trace them through the #supplychain on a single and common platform. Thanks to this system, #FakeMeds can be detected before reaching patients in countries, by enabling users to match the data that is available on a defined medical product with the data that the manufacturer would have initially uploaded in the TRVST app. Learn more about how the platform works in the video below! In response to the mpox outbreak in South Africa, the World Health Organization (WHO) shipped medication for the treatment of an additional 50 people for mpox locally. At a briefing on Wednesday, the WHO's Dr Joseph WAMALA revealed that the medication currently available in the country, known as Tecovirimat, TPOXX or ST-246, was only sufficient to treat 15 people with a two-week dose. All the doses of Tecovirimat are being supplied under a Section 21 application to the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) and are not yet registered in South Africa. A vaccine being used in other countries to prevent mpox is also not registered in South Africa. Monkeypox, a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus, has historically been confined to remote areas in Central and West Africa. However, the 2024 outbreak has seen a notable increase in cases, with several urban centers being affected, raising concerns about the virus's potential to cause a widespread health crisis. In Nigeria, one of the hardest-hit countries, the situation has been particularly concerning. The outbreak has spread across multiple states, with both rural and urban populations reporting cases. The Nigerian government, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international health bodies, has ramped up efforts to contain the virus. These efforts include mass vaccination campaigns, public health awareness programs, and the establishment of quarantine centers for those infected or exposed to the virus. Despite these measures, challenges remain. The country's healthcare infrastructure is strained, and misinformation about the disease is prevalent, complicating containment efforts. The public is urged to adhere to preventive measures, including avoiding contact with wild animals, practicing good hygiene, and reporting any symptoms promptly. The situation in Nigeria is a stark reminder of the need for robust public health systems and rapid response mechanisms to contain outbreaks like monkeypox. While the government continues to fight the outbreak, the international community is also called upon to provide support in resources, expertise, and funding to prevent the situation from escalating further.

In support of Africa CDC's pledge to deliver 10 million Mpox vaccine doses by 2025, Bavarian Nordic is partnering with Africa CDC to boost vaccine manufacturing in Africa. This year, they could supply up to 2 million doses in addition to current orders. The collaboration is a key step in ensuring equitable access to vaccines, especially following the Mpox Public Health Emergency of Continental Security (PHECS).
