***MEET OUR NEW APPRENTICES*** Corbey Construction are very proud of our excellent record and commitment to the training of Apprentices and our excellent working relationships with Truro and Penwith College and Cornwall College. The Fourth Apprentice Bricklayer we would like you to meet is BLAKE TONKIN who has been with us for just over 9 months and attends the Truro College Campus. Blake is in the first year of his apprenticeship and has settled in really well. Blakes positive impact on the gang he works with is his punctuality and ability to deal with the daily pressures of busy sites. There has been a lot of changes for Blake to deal with over the last few months. Different sites, work styles, switching from timber frame construction to traditional construction from day to day but Blake has taken this all in his stride. Well done Blake…😊 Here’s what Blake had to say; * What made you decide to undertake a Bricklaying Apprenticeship. I decided to go for an apprenticeship as I enjoy hands on work and being indoors working has never appealed to me * What made you choose Corbey Construction as a potential employer I saw an advert online for apprenticeships and I thought I’d give it a go. I also had a family member currently working for Corbey Construction and they said great things about the company. * In your own words describe how your first 9 months has gone, and how much you have learnt already. My first 9 months has flown by and feels like yesterday that I had my first day. It’s also good that I can be learning the trade of bricklaying while earning. I’ve gone from not having a clue about how a house is built to actually taking part in building them, which is amazing * What’s the best thing about working for Corbey Construction. The best thing about working for Corbey Construction is I get a head start on other apprentices at college as I’m learning the trade of bricklaying everyday on site. Also it’s great to be part of a good, friendly team of workers who are there to help me when needed. * What are you most excited about when you become a qualified bricklayer in the future When I am become a qualified bricklayer I’ll be able to see all the hard work I’ve put in has been worth it. I’ll also be able to say I can build a house and actually believe in myself, something I never thought I’d be able to say. A note to the apprentices and young people in the trades. Construction is tough, it's not for everyone. Experience must be earned the hard way, there is no hack or shortcut. It can only be earned one day at a time by getting up early, lacing up your boots, and facing the challenges of the day. But once earned it can never be taken away, it's yours, and it's invaluable! As you gain experience and confidence, things will get easier, never easy, but most definitely easier. If dealing with the weather, and working hard is not a problem for you, you should be proud of yourself. You are one of a select few that can make this a career. When I did my apprenticeship only about 20% made it through the four years. If your biggest challenge is the people, find a new company, niche, or team. People should not be the reason you leave construction. This industry is filled with opportunities. Many of us out here want to see you learn and succeed, come work for us. I always said I'd rather dig ditches in the summer with a good team, than staple paper in the air conditioning with a bad team. As you grow, your experience and your reputation are keys that can open countless doors. I've been there, I'm a third-generation commercial carpenter with over 25 years of experience in construction. Our latest President's Blog highlights the incredible strides the BCIA is making in tackling the construction industry's skills shortage and ensuring a brighter, greener future. The UK Government is working alongside Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and the National House-Building Council (NHBC) to launch 32 Homebuilding Skills Hubs to fast-track training in construction! In real-terms this means that over 5,000 additional construction apprenticeship places will be available by 2028. This initiative is part of a £140m industry investment in building homes, which aims to see 1.5 million new homes built.
