The leadership of higher education institutions should reflect the diversity of the students they serve. However, a 2020 report by the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) revealed that over 80% of higher education administrator positions are held by white faculty, while BIPOC faculty hold just 13% of top executive positions. The Volcker Alliance's Future Leaders of Schools of Public Service (FLSPS) is working to change this. University of Maryland School of Public Policy Associate Professors Niambi Michele Carter and Cullen C. Merritt, Ph.D. joined the inaugural cohort of FLSPS in 2022, with Associate Professors John C. Ronquillo, Ph.D. and Michael Woldemariam continuing the important work in the second cohort. Their participation in the program highlights the critical need for mentorship and networks to bring BIPOC individuals into senior leadership positions. Interim leadership and temporary appointments were the topic of a recent article in The Chronicle of Higher Education. There was some debate about this in my LinkedIn feed, but we have been seeing an increase in inquiries and requests for interim and on-demand leaders. Why? One reason is that colleges and universities must move ahead with key initiatives while the process of hiring a new, permanent leader plays out. And due to evolving variables in the hiring process, it often takes longer than expected to execute a search and onboard a new permanent leader. If you'd like to read our thoughts on interim leadership in higher education, including examples of how interim leaders are supporting colleges and universities, read our short article, and contact me to learn more about our premier interim network. #InterimLeadership #HigherEdLeadership

Interim leadership and temporary appointments were the topic of a recent article in The Chronicle of Higher Education. One reason is that colleges and universities must move ahead with key initiatives while the process of hiring a new, permanent leader plays out. In the past year, WittKieffer has assisted numerous institutions in finding interim leaders to address strained leadership capacities. Here are key benefits of interim executives: **Maintain Momentum**: Interim leaders ensure critical projects and initiatives continue during leadership vacancies. **Access Expertise**: They bring specialized skills to tackle extraordinary challenges like technology implementations and fundraising campaigns. **Mentorship**: Interim leaders mentor new hires, aiding in their onboarding and transition. - **Change Agents**: They make tough decisions and drive necessary changes without fear of repercussions. Interim leadership is essential for navigating transitions and maintaining institutional progress. If you'd like to discuss a need for interim or on-demand leadership at your insitution, I'd be happy to connect. #InterimLeadership

We have nine Columbia University degrees in my immediate family. I don’t need a single degree to know this: Hate on campus will not bring peace to the Middle East. What it will do, and has already done, is perpetuate a cycle of anger and trauma that serves no cause—that frees no one. There are no safe spaces when ideas are weaponized. Today’s students are tomorrow’s educators, judges, innovators, and global change makers, which is why school leaders and educators owe it to them, and to us, to get this right. #leadership #education #highereducation
