Bohinjska hiša (2023): temporary use of a former kindergarten building The old kindergarten in Bohinjska Bistrica lost its original function when the children moved to the new premises. We evaluated the feasibility of converting the building into library, municipal housing, or community centre. Because the vacant building was in good shape and the demand for community space was high, we proposed temporary use as a viable short-term scenario. We developed the concept for temporary use, a new brand "Bohinjska hiša", compiled a tender for users and consulted on the minimal renovation of the space. These days, the building is successfully finishing its first 6 months of new life! #NewArticle Emergent place-identity: place activation through the architectural restoration of a small Hakka household in the Hong Kong countryside Jimmy Tsz-wai Ho This paper discusses the cocreation of an emergent place-identity in a Hakka household in the Hong Kong countryside triggered by architectural restoration. Located in Kuk Po, a quintessential Hakka village that was established over 300 years ago, Yeung House was restored by the research team under a government-funded initiative to regenerate architectural values. It signifies the adaptive lifestyle of Hakka immigrants through its adapted siting, hybrid tectonics and modernised features. Different activities were initiated by the villagers and coarranged by the research team. Subsequently, it is argued that a place-identity has emerged in Ng To and is influenced by the distinctiveness of the restored Yeung House and the continuity of the front yard. New meanings of the place have been created by the villagers through the practice of a potential, alternative lifestyle in the rural-urban parallel. https://lnkd.in/gnGFQTUp

Creating a comprehensive vision demands patience, particularly in the revitalization of neighborhoods. As fresh neighborhood concepts seek direction, Byro Vingi prioritizes the desires and requirements of the residents, translating their input into tangible designs and visualizations of potential futures. Designing a vibrant port district on the shores of Vesijärvi is a meticulous blend of creativity and functionality. Located on the northern end of the Niemen ranta area, this district becomes more than just a harbor; it transforms into a bustling hub of activity and charm. During the day, the Port District is a business friendly startup hub connected with the local Lahden yliopistokampus. At night, the transformation into a lively nightlife and hotspot for student life takes hold and creates a destination for afterworks, student functions, and an area for life deep into the night. Connected to Vesijärvi, boats can cruise right up, dock, and join in on the atmosphere. By offering a harmonious mix of leisure, commerce, and natural beauty on the lake, this lively port district becomes not just a stop along the way, but a destination in its own right—a place where memories are made and stories unfold against the backdrop of the shimmering lake. The Port District is just part of the larger scheme for the urban design proposal 'Tyrskyt' for Niemen ranta-alue in Lahti, Finland. #innovation #architecture #arkkitehtuuri #finland #suomi #kestäväkaupunki #lahti #sustainability #localizedresourcing #niemenrantaalue #design #architecturedaily #visualization

Placemaking: A Path to Community Resilience As urban planners, our work goes beyond designing structures—it’s about creating meaningful spaces that foster connections and build resilient communities. I’ve been inspired by Singapore’s approach to placemaking, where planners, architects, and local communities work together to transform public spaces into vibrant, people-centered environments. Placemaking enriches both the physical and social fabric of our cities. Whether through small interventions in streetscapes or large-scale precinct activations, these efforts create places that feel welcoming, inclusive, and reflective of local identities. We must adopt a similar mindset in Pakistan, particularly in areas like ex-FATA, where community-driven urban design can be the cornerstone for building social cohesion and economic growth. Let’s explore how we can make our public spaces more engaging, delightful, and, most importantly, our own. #UrbanPlanning #Placemaking #CommunityDevelopment #Pakistan

Private Residence, Harare, Zimbabwe Design evolution or (r)evolution? Working on the renovation of a private residence for a couple in Harare, Zimbabwe got me thinking about the unexplored narratives, the untold, unbuilt designs. The unexplored options. (as the 2 images shown of diffrent stages in the design development) With the designer and the client in a (healthy) tangle of ideas, the project at hand resultantly culminates in one design that may or may not embody the previously conceived ideas of what the project initially intended to be. The multiplicities of tangents that a design project can take as it evolves resultantly leaves traces of potentialities. Potentialities that may be eplored in other subsequent projects or some that never see the light of day. Does that mean there are no longer existant, or that they are irrelevant, or they just showed up on the wrong project and wrong timing? Maybe all of the above is correct, or neither is. Maybe we are just floating in a sea of Potentialities that reveal and conceal themselves at will. I believe everyone in any field also has access to the sea. If only we could conceive the vastness and delve in. AI perhaps? A tangle between possibilities. #architecture #originality #creativearchitecture #creativity #philosophy #zimbabwearchitecture #zimarchitecture #housedesign

Our latest issue is out! We have a varied selection of projects in this issue. The least conventional, perhaps, is the Bike Haus, a private museum for a personal collection of vintage motorcycles designed and constructed by Rebel Base Collective. It needed to be future-proofed so that it could easily be converted into a house. As the architects say, this meant designing two buildings in one. Tshakhuma Mall in Limpopo is a fine example of something for which MDSArchitecture is becoming well-known – harnessing the potential of retail development to enhance the social and economic life of the region. Kent apartments by Elphick Proome Architecture in LA Lucia does something related, but almost the opposite, embracing a rare opportunity for urban densification in Durban's suburbs, helped by its proximity to a mall. In Cape Town, GASS Architecture Studios has found an elegant way to convert a heritage building and extend it to create much-needed student accommodation. As the practice often does, they have not just interpreted the geometry of the existing building through a contemporary lens for the additions, but have also seen it as an opportunity to contribute to the life of the neighbourhood. SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY: AN IMPERATIVE IN MODERN URBAN DESIGN Social sustainability in urban design is key to creating inclusive and resilient cities. It is defined as the ability of a city to foster an environment that promotes the well-being, cohesion, and long-term cultural development of its inhabitants. This concept encompasses key dimensions: Social Interaction, Sense of Place, Community Participation, Safety, Social Equity, and Residential Satisfaction. Quality urban design positively influences these dimensions by creating public spaces that encourage interaction, respect local identity, promote participation, enhance perceptions of safety, and ensure equitable access to services. According to Larimian, T., & Sadeghi, A. (2019), the relationship between social sustainability and design quality is significant. High-quality urban design improves social cohesion, residential satisfaction, and community participation. It creates attractive spaces that support positive interactions and invite residents to participate in their community. It is important to note, however, that the impact of design varies by dimension. For example, social equity appears to be less influenced by design quality than other dimensions. In this sense, we must think about how our decisions affect the daily lives of citizens and act to create environments that truly promote collective well-being. #UrbanDesign #SocialSustainability #InclusiveCities #UrbanAction.

Comprehensive Project.MLA.2024 Tushal Marg: Historic Urban Development between Pashupatinath Temple and Bauddhanath Stupa Advisor: Dr. Jeremy Merrill Traditionally, people would walk as far as Tibet and India with communal stops along the way, creating a walkable trail system in the Kathmandu Valley. This cultural exchange and religious diversity shaped the valley’s landscape, architecture, and heritage. Today, Kathmandu Valley faces issues such as urban sprawl, land encroachment, flooding, pollution, traffic congestion, social disparities and poor urban quality. The rapid changes in spatial character have reduced open and social spaces, with only 0.25 square meters of open space per person compared to the WHO recommendation of 9 square meters. Tushal Marg, an existing tertiary street, is proposed as a cultural connection between the two monumental zones within the Kathmandu Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. The development of the trail segment at the new art district at "Taragaun Next" serves as a framework for integrating historic precedents, nature, performative art and dynamic cultural spaces into the urban fabric of Tushal Marg. The design typologies are informed by community engagement and historic precedents to understand the local context and needs. This prototype development can be implemented to Kathmandu Valley's UNESCO sites and beyond, rethinking street connections and underutilized spaces for sustainable community well-being.

Yesterday, the Poznań City Council adopted the local area development plan for the part of the city where we are revitalizing tye Stara Rzeźnia area. We believe it is now all set out to become a hallmark of Poznan architecture. Workspaces, apartments, as well as commercial, service and cultural facilities will be arranged in the renovated historic buildings and in the newly constructed ones. In the vicinity, the city has also planned a new city park and the Wielkopolskie Uprising Museum. - Stara Rzeźnia is an area with huge potential that needed a local plan. I would like to thank the councilors for adopting it. Now this inaccessible post-industrial area will be able to gain a new quality and be opened to Poznań residents - said Jacek Jaśkowiak, mayor of Poznań. According to the assumptions of the plan, St. Wojciech Hill will be connected by a green belt with the park and green zones in Stara Rzeźnia. In the area of the former meat processing plant itself, the share of biologically active area will be at least 30% and the area of the green zone that we want to arrange there will be over 5,600 m2. The plan also includes a pedestrian connection with tall greenery, leading from the Hill through the new park to the area of Stara Rzeźnia. The plan also confirmed that there is no threat to the existing line of trees along Grochowe Łąki Street and indicates the approximate route of trees along other roads. For more information about our investment, read: https://lnkd.in/d83M7aBX #ProjectbyVastint #stararzezniapoznan #VastintPoland #Poznan In the photo - a mock up of Stara Rzeźnia - with restored monuments and beautiful greenery
