I am so incredibly proud and humble to be included in this campaign of highlighting some of Ottawa's strong, valuable, and empowering women, leading the way to success. Imposter syndrome is real, but I won't let it get the best of me this time. As the saying goes, "A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one." In my professional career, I have certainly garnered the skills and experience to be an organizational-nonprofit-jack-of-all-trades-type, with finely tuned skills from project and volunteer management to safety and events planning. My career path which I've traveled purposefully down for over a decade in the nonprofit sector is true to who I am. Social responsibility is a big deal to me. I want to ensure that the impact I have leaves a positive mark on the organizations I work with, and in the community in which we live. There's another saying by which I stand by: "Nobody made a bigger mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little." This is the quote which I found ringing in my head at the tail end of the pandemic, and with tensions high in Canada's National Capital Region. I saw the struggle of local businesses, I saw a disconnected community, grasping for positivity. I couldn't eat delicious locally-made foods every night, and I couldn't endlessly buy locally-sold goods, but I could draw a little. As someone who has struggled with self-doubt, I'll admit that at that time, it was really tough to squash the self doubt and to offer my artistic services to local businesses as a means of putting a little colour and fun on their business windows. Some people close to me echoed doubtful what-ifs, but I considered this initial extension of a helping hand as what I could offer at the time. I offered this service free-of-charge at that moment and before I knew it, I had a large portfolio of art and a list of repeat paying clients. Acknowledge your value, relent to your tenacity and perseverance, and just do. You have the drive, you have the resiliency, you have the skills. In an effort to empower others in our community to see and #upskill the value that they bring to the table, to employers, to the community, and beyond, join me in supporting Dress For Success Ottawa National Capital Region 's #HERStory campaign this #WomensHistoryMonth. I've endeavored to raise $500 for them. You can donate here to my campaign: https://lnkd.in/gfvXPZvx Big, heartfelt thanks in advance for your support! Dress for Success is a nonprofit organization with chapters across the Globe. Their mission is to help unemployed and underemployed women achieve economic independence by providing no-fee programs, development tools, and professional attire to thrive in work and in life.
October is #WomensHistoryMonth, and that means it’s time for our fourth annual #HERstory Campaign! Follow along as we highlight 16 inspiring individuals over the next month. We are honoured to showcase this round up of remarkable leaders in the Ottawa community. It is our hope that their stories inspire you as much as they inspired our team! Each participant is fundraising to support women and gender nonconforming individuals who access #DFSOttawa services. By sharing their HERstory, they are empowering others to write their own. Visit the campaign website to check out all the profiles; if someone's story resonates with you, please consider donating ❤️ https://lnkd.in/er_sdHdU We hope you’ll join #DressForSuccess #Ottawa in celebrating Women's History Month with this exciting campaign! #WomenEmpoweringWomen

(Content warning: Discussion of Gender-Based Violence.) All the women in my family are survivors of gender-based violence. The perpetrators were our own relatives. Our teachers. Our friends. Our partners. Our ex-partners. Our bosses. Our colleagues. Our board members. Every time I think about this, I get a sick feeling at the pit of my stomach. When will enough be enough? We live in a world where women lead despite all the odds being against us. Women lead despite the fact that: ⏰ 5 women or girls are killed every hour by someone in their family; 💔 26% of women aged 15 and older have been subjected to intimate partner violence; 🙋🏻♀️ Only less than 40% of women who have experienced violence seek help; and 🌈 For the LGBTQIA+ community, Indigenous women, ethnic minorities, migrants and refugees, and women and girls living with disabilities — these figures are much worse. When will we live in a world where women lead because we are safe to do so? When will we live in a world where women leaders thrive, because our relatives, our teachers, our friends, our partners, our ex-partners, our bosses, our colleagues and our board members, all back us to succeed? From November 25 to December 10, Wedu stands in solidarity for the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence by raising awareness about it, challenging existing societal norms, and calling on our decision-makers to address such fundamental violations to human rights. Once again, Wedu calls on you to donate to support the work of organisations like ours, which enable women leaders to take up the space we all so rightfully deserve. https://lnkd.in/gt_fNeHc #RiseTogether #LeadwithWedu #InvestinWomen #OrangeTheWorld #16days

I’m really in awe to see so many wealthy women organizing and chairing events for Hawai’i (*insert group*) for Harris. It got me thinking- how powerful it could be to also focus on increasing the involvement of diverse women in local politics right here in Hawai’i. In the lead-up to this year's primary elections, female candidates raised an average of $23,492, while men raised twice as much. The largest gap between male and female candidates was in individual contributions, where women raised only 23% of total individual donations. There’s a strong focus on advocating for a female president but it raises the question: how do you address the treatment of women in leadership positions within your own local community? Within your organization? High-profile advocacy is very demure, very classy… But I hope the commitment for progress isn’t just a trend/ cause du jour but something that sticks and drives lasting impact, both nationally and locally.

The internet has been a really difficult place to be a woman this last week. My social media has been littered with the phrase “your body, my choice” and unguarded rhetoric from misogynists who feel emboldened to share exactly what they think about women. It shows how much work there is to be done. These influencers have a grip on so many young men, and I feel heartbroken for how girls and young women must feel every time they hear their peers parroting these views. Data from a year ago shows that 1 in 6 boys aged 6-15 years old have a positive view of Andrew Tate. Luckily this drops to around 1 in 10 for his specific views on women, but it’s still too many. There are many issues at play here - glorification of negative role models for young men, the societal pressures of masculinity, pressures from family and peers about ‘how to be’, changing employment expectations leaving a void of identity, a lack of mental health awareness and support. The solution to these problems are not simple, but I know one thing: they are not the responsibility of young women to put up with, bear the brunt of, or to solve. Their voices must continue to be championed, and for this, I feel so lucky to work for the most amazing charity, where a difference can be made. We support girls and young women from disadvantaged backgrounds to transform their life chances through mentoring. The power of a connection with an adult in their life, who is a woman that shares their experiences and opens up opportunities for them, genuinely changes their outlook on the future and their readiness to tackle the challenges ahead. If you’d like to get involved, your workplace would like to offer a visit or open day, or even if you’d like to fundraise for us, we’d love to hear from you. Feel free to send me a DM, or email us at the address on our website. https://lnkd.in/eiSY-gp7
