The 10x engineer is REAL. We've all heard of the elusive and divisive "10x engineer" – a legend in tech circles, rarely spotted in the wild (or in our virtual Gather office), able to do a herculean amount of work compared to everyone else. Building great tech in real estate isn't easy. I’ve spent the last 17 years building data-driven products in document-heavy industries. And from experience, we don't usually have access to the best technologists in our industry. (For example, many of the best technologists have been drawn to fintech, leaving the traditional industries struggling to attract top talent!) But we're turning this narrative upside down with 5D. When I think of hiring, I don’t think of just hiring engineers - I think of it as building a genuinely world-class engineering company. Everyone's got a different definition of a great engineer - for us, it's about deeply product-minded technical experts who care about the real-world impact of their work. The key to this is putting our engineers incredibly close to our customers. When the people doing the building and creation have the full context of user problems, the outcomes are just better. And this matters more than you might think. There's a massive difference between extracting a number from a single-page invoice versus understanding nuanced parking rules buried across 10 different documents in a 500-page lease (with handwritten notes and maybe a coffee stain on one page 😅). What's exciting is seeing how this plays out in practice. Our engineers get deeply invested in user problems, not just technical solutions. They're right there with customers, understanding challenges firsthand, and building solutions that actually work in the real world. This isn't how most real estate tech is built. But we're seeing the impact of this approach every day. It has helped us build a genuinely world-class engineering team and a product that solves REAL pain points of our customers - something that isn't common in our industry…
