On Tuesday, November 12, join us as we honor their incredible contributions to the PR field at the Night of Honors, hosted by the University of Charleston's PRSSA chapter. This event celebrates those who have left a lasting impact on the industry and mentored the next generation of PR leaders in West Virginia. The event will also showcase the "best of the best" in our industry and in West Virginia, recognizing winners of PRSA WV's Crystal Awards and Best of West Virginia Awards. Fellow #PR practitioners: did you know that April is APR Month for the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA)? I received my Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) in 2007 and have maintained the credential since then. I look back at it as a pivotal career moment, changing the way I approach my work and helping me build PR programs that moved me from tactician to being a business partner. One thing I really like about the APR is it tends to signify that people with the credential are committed to ethical practice. The stereotypes of PR and many of the most-visible PR people on TV are not the role models we need for our profession and the people we serve. APRs are. I encourage PR professionals everywhere to consider pursuing the APR. It is a challenging process, but the upsides make it all worth it. I like to pepper my talks, particularly when speaking about doing PR, personal branding etc with real life examples of how implementing a PR strategy can help individuals or organisations reach their goals. This is particularly important in the arena I have spent a lot of time in - the black faith community - because there are leaders and individuals who don't fully understand what PR is and what it can do for them. Real life examples and case studies hammer home the point of how using something, doing something or not doing something has made a difference in the life of an individual, organisations, church, charity or business and it makes the listener aware, what can happen if they follow suite. It's so important then, when preparing a talk to dig deep into one's well of life experiences - whether personal or career/business wise - to extrapolate stories that will aid and enhance the speaking experience for those that will be listening to you. When doing so, it's important to: ✳ Know how to tell your story - i.e., it has a clear beginning, middle and end ✳ Choose stories that people will be able to relate to, no matter who they are and ✳ Understand, in advance, the key lessons or insights you want people to gain from sharing your story. If you choose interesting relatable stories people will remember them beyond the actual talk, as stories are a universal language, that connect with people in a way that pure factual information does not. So the next time you are asked to deliver a talk, or do a presentation, or even share insights on a panel, don't forget to share some real life case studies. It'll ensure that your talk or panel contribution is remembered for all the right reasons.
