Weeks ago, these does amazed us by giving their first birth to 18 adorable babies.. It was a testament to our exceptional care and dedication to goat farming. We experienced the joy of witnessing new life and reaped the benefits. Goat milk provided us with nutritious goodness, while sustainable meat production met the demand for healthy protein. This is the reason why you should invest in goat farming whilst in vour Youths 1. A goat can give you two deliveries in a year. Assuming an average birth of two babies per delivery and zero mortality, you can have 5 goats after 395days from one goat. 2. Goats are very cheap to feed compared to cattle, especially during this Elnino period where natural pastures are scarce. 3. Goat manure is a natural fertilizer enhanced soil fertility for horticultural produce and crop farming, and goat grazing promoted environmental sustainability. Goat production business is taking centre stage in Zimbabwe livestock farming now and we will soon be a mature industry like South Africa so that we take advantage of the export market that requires much bigger scale than we supply currently. As aspiring young farmers, we embraced the opportunity for entrepreneurship, developing vital skills. Together, we created a brighter future through goat farming, nurturing a sustainable and prosperous path 🌱🐐 ❤️ #youthinagriculture #farminginzimbabwe #successbreedssuccess #youngandfarming #zimyoungfarmers

SNV's 5-year Inclusive Livestock Development for Smallholder Farmers (INCLUDE) Project, implemented in 21 districts of Uganda, builds upon the success of the recently concluded Integrated Smallholder Dairy Programme (ISDAP). At the recent Buhweju District Farmers Day, LC5 Chairman Deo Atuhaire commended SNV’s support for the Government of Uganda's livestock initiatives, emphasising the role of development partners like SNV in complementing national efforts to improve livelihoods. While ISDAP enabled 15,000 smallholder dairy farmers to enhance their livelihoods through small-scale integrated farming, focusing on dairy farming by increasing farm-level incomes, employment, and household food and nutrition security, the INCLUDE Project aims to empower 75,000 smallholder farmers in Kigezi, Greater Ankole, Rwenzori, and Busoga subregions to achieve resilient livelihoods and a living income through sustainable, high-frequency livestock-based practices. #InclusiveLivestock #SmallholderFarmers #SustainableAgriculture #UgandaAgriculture #SNV #ISDAP #FoodSecurity #ResilientFarming #EmpowerFarmers #LivestockDevelopment #CommunityDevelopment Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Uganda Wageningen University & Research MAAIF Uganda Makerere University Dairy Development Authority SNV Tanzania United Nations SDGs

WHY INTEGRATED FARMING IS SO IMPORTANT TO AFRICAN FOOD SYSTEM? The #IntegratedFarmingSystem (IFS) is a holistic farming approach specially designed for small/marginal farmers to enhance the system #productivity, #profitability, and #employment generation of their farm, ultimately ensuring their #food and nutrition security for their livelihood. The mechanism of IFS offers various ecosystem services making farms environment-friendly, sustainable, and climate-resilient. IFS is characterized by the allocation of different agricultural components systematically in a single farm performing synergistically among themselves making the farm more productive, healthy, biodiversity enriched, and eco-friendly than simplified farms. According #Rwanda 5th population Housing Census (2022), #Rwanda is made of 3,312,743 Households, of which 69% are engaged in agriculture activities (crop production or animal husbandry). 69% of Households that are engaged in agriculture, 26.8% do ONLY crop farming while 9% do Animal rearing ONLY. Guess how many households doing #integratedfarming !😎! 64.2% perform an Integrated Farming and this has a good implication to Rwanda Food system through promoting nutrient cycling, natural pest control, and diversification of income sources. Do you agree?

Today we will be looking back at a former IIRR project with a Project Retrospective on CLI-MARK. The CLI-MARK Project, running from 2017 to 2020, was a collaboration between IIRR, CTA, and local partners in Kenya and Ethiopia. It aimed to enhance the resilience of livestock value chains for pastoralist communities in Northern Kenya and Southern Ethiopia through market-driven approaches. The Scope: In Kenya and Ethiopia, Pastoralist communities make up a substantial portion of the population (9 million and 15 million respectively), but these populations remain marginalized and economically deprived. ▪️ Ethiopia's rangelands cover over 60% of the country and support about 40% of its livestock population. ▪️ Pastoralism contributes to 20% of Ethiopia’s domestic exports, 90% of live animal exports, and 80% of its yearly milk supply. ▪️ It is estimated that pastoralism accounts for up to 44% of African GDP, with 1.3 billion people relying upon pastoralist livestock value chains. ▪️ Over 75% of cattle herds in Kenya are kept by pastoralists. ▪️ Pastoralism accounts for 19% of Ethiopian and 13% of Kenyan GDP. The Approach: ▪️ Market Development: The project supported the transformation of 10 livestock markets into business hubs, benefiting 100,000 livestock farmers. It increased livestock trade from 40,000 to 75,000 participants and supported 80 enterprises led by women and youth, most of which (72 of 80) saw increased incomes. ▪️ Insurance & Information: The project scaled up Index-Based Livestock Insurance (implemented by 10,000 pastoralists) and promoted a market-led weather information system, helping pastoralists mitigate drought risk. ▪️ Capacity Building: 80 livestock-based enterprises were strengthened through training, grants, and mentorship, leading to improved business practices. Project Sustainability and Long-term Impact: The project had sustainability built into its design, with market driven approaches producing self-reinforcing momentum for change. Moreover, the capacity-building intervention utilized participatory approaches, developing community management and organizational skills, providing opportunities for sustainability. The project demonstrated the business value of practices to its stakeholders, ensuring community buy-in and long-term impact. #pastoralism #climateadaption #ruraldevelopment #sustainabledevelopment #climatejustice
