GPFEM World tour? Good Luck to Diego Durán on the next leg of his GPFEM world tour? Thanks for visiting University of Dundee and looking at my PhD work on rapid load testing of piles and calibration chamber testing of piles pushed at very high speeds in clay. Including viscous rate effects in GPFEM seems to be doing a good job of simulating rapid load testing in clay. Allows us to gain insights of what is going on around the pile with realistic installation and loading simulation. Something I could only have dreamt of in 2000. https://lnkd.in/gTx24xX9 https://lnkd.in/gddQYirD Good luck with the next phase NGI - Norwegian Geotechnical Institute applying GPFEM to soil characterization of silty sands and performing numerical simulations of CPTu. It has been a pleasure for myself and Scott Robinson to work with you and good luck with your PhD studies. Remember Numerical modellers, we like to have visitors in Dundee and being physical modellers we create lots of nice data to validate your models and can back this up with soil characterisation kit to get those niggly numerical parameters you need. Thanks to Marcos Arroyo and Matteo Oryem Ciantia for creating this opportunity. #GPFEM #numericalmodelling #piles #rapidloadtesting #physicalmodelling

It is my great pleasure to inform you that our article entitled "Sub-optimal controller design for time-delay nonlinear partial differential equation systems: an extended state-dependent differential Riccati equation approach" has been published in "International Journal of Systems Science". In this article, a sub-optimal controller based on Extended State-Dependent Differential Riccati Equation (ESDDRE) is suggested for a class of time-delay nonlinear Partial Differential Equation (PDE) systems. At first, an extended pseudo linearisation presentation for parameterisation form using State-Dependent Coefficients (SDC) is proposed. In this presentation, all the time-delay parts are placed in system matrices as well as in input vectors. By defining a cost function and a Hamiltonian related to the PDE systems, the sub-optimal control law regarded on the ESDDRE is obtained. The stability of the closed-loop system based on the ESDDRE control approach is ensured by using a proper Lyapunov function and also Poincaré inequality. Numerical simulation results for three time-delay nonlinear PDE systems illustrate the appropriate performance of the proposed control approach. #PDE #timedelay #EPL #ESDDRE #Poincaré inequality

Discover an insightful EQS research article: Theoretical and quantitative evaluation of hybrid PML-ABCs for seismic wave simulation 🔹 Authors: Yuhang Wang, Wei Zhang 🔹 Keywords: absorbing boundary condition, perfectly matched layer, Higdon boundary, hybrid, finite difference 🔹 Key points: - We systematically study the absorption improvement of two kinds of hybrid PML-ABCs. - Our results show that the absorption improvement by the hybrid scheme is not better than a simple adjustment of the damping profile of the PML. - The stain algorithm is used to determine the origins of the reflections for a discretized PML problem. In this recent JFM paper by our group, the IITD-AMU CFD collaboration, (authored by Mohd. Perwez Ali, Nadeem Hasan, and Sanjeev Sanghi), we present an in-depth analysis of the wake dynamics behind a heated circular cylinder, applying a non-Oberbeck-Boussinesq (NOB) model, which accounts for variations in fluid properties with temperature. Unlike the classical Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation, this approach incorporates the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations, which leads to a more accurate description of the thermal effects and wake behavior at higher temperature gradients and non-uniform density fields. This research offers critical insights into the complex interactions between heat and flow structures in compressible fluids, in particular of the onset of various 3-D instability modes. #IITD #AMU

I am excited to announce that our latest research paper, "Seismic performance of BRBF with SMA core using incremental dynamic analysis," has been published in the Australian Journal of Structural Engineering. This study introduces a new model for Buckling Restrained Braced Frames (BRBF) where Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) is used for the yielding core instead of steel. We investigated the seismic behavior of structures with these innovative braces and evaluated their performance factors, such as permanent displacements, inter-story drifts, and response modification factors. You can read the full article here: [https://lnkd.in/gWMYaDUZ) Special thanks to my co-authors, Hamed Qomi and my mentor, Dr. Payam Ashtari, for their invaluable guidance and support.
