GPFEM World tour? Good Luck to Diego Durán on the next leg of his GPFEM world tour? Thanks for visiting University of Dundee and looking at my PhD work on rapid load testing of piles and calibration chamber testing of piles pushed at very high speeds in clay. Including viscous rate effects in GPFEM seems to be doing a good job of simulating rapid load testing in clay. Allows us to gain insights of what is going on around the pile with realistic installation and loading simulation. Something I could only have dreamt of in 2000. https://lnkd.in/gTx24xX9 https://lnkd.in/gddQYirD Good luck with the next phase NGI - Norwegian Geotechnical Institute applying GPFEM to soil characterization of silty sands and performing numerical simulations of CPTu. It has been a pleasure for myself and Scott Robinson to work with you and good luck with your PhD studies. Remember Numerical modellers, we like to have visitors in Dundee and being physical modellers we create lots of nice data to validate your models and can back this up with soil characterisation kit to get those niggly numerical parameters you need. Thanks to Marcos Arroyo and Matteo Oryem Ciantia for creating this opportunity. #GPFEM #numericalmodelling #piles #rapidloadtesting #physicalmodelling

🌟 Exciting Research Update! 🌟 In our latest work with Xesus Nogueira, supported by EPSRC, the UK Turbulence Consortium and ARCHER2 at EPCC, we develop an Adaptive Dissipation/Dispersion Adjustment (ADDA) algorithm—a useful tool in our arsenal of computational tools for scale-resolving simulations using iLES for compressible flows. 🔍 What does ADDA do? Dynamically identifies well-resolved and under-resolved regions. Adjusts numerical dissipation/dispersion for high-order CWENOZ schemes. Further tunes the flux-dissipation term to handle discontinuities effectively. 🚀 Where is it implemented? Within ucns3d.com, an open-source, arbitrary-order finite-volume framework for unstructured meshes. 💡 Why it matters: We rigorously tested ADDA across subsonic, transonic, and supersonic regimes in under-resolved iLES simulations. The result? Enhanced robustness and scale-resolving accuracy Computational efficiency Physically meaningful outcomes 📄 Read the full details in our latest publication! https://lnkd.in/eV36MUmc #CFD #Turbulence #ResearchInnovation #OpenSource #Engineering

The TAC Young Member’s Committee is excited to announce the next session in our educational series for our members led by speaker Ali Fallah Yeznabad, GHD Consultant "Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis and Performance-based Analysis for Design and Analysis of Geo-structural Systems: Case Study of Sloping Grounds in Greater Vancouver, BC." In this presentation on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at 3 pm (EST) / 12 pm (PST), an example of embankments and sloping grounds in Greater Vancouver, based on the local tectonic of BC are considered where the criterion of acceptable performance is usually specified by tolerable displacements of the soil body. PSHA and local seismicity and their effects are elaborated, and the difference between a probabilistic solution and a traditional pseud-probabilistic method is also shown. Based on realistic and more accurate results of PSHA-based PBD, this kind of analysis is recommended for future seismic evaluations in the area of geo-structural systems. Learn more about the presentation and the speaker at: https://buff.ly/40sL5AX Focused on introductory topics, the webinar series will strive to teach basic tunnelling themes not often taught in school but beneficial to those working in the industry. If you’re a student, just starting your career, or someone who likes to continually learn, then you’ll be sure to pick up something new. #TAC #YoungMembers #Tunnelling #CanadianTunneling #geo-structural #seismichazardanalysis
