How do certain institutional factors within educational systems contribute to inequalities among students?
We're excited to introduce Dr. Aleksei Chernulich, Assistant Professor of Economics at Durham University, who joined the Institute of Advanced Study (IAS) as a research fellow in April 2024! His research focusses on the economics of education, specifically investigating the role of peer effects in shaping student outcomes.
According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) 78% of parents believe that education is key to their child's future success. Chernulich investigates how student sorting - driven by institutional structures - could lead to inequity.
On September 17, Chernulich will discuss how high-achieving students are drawn to more challenging courses by two of these institutional features: the price of educational options and the need for favourable peer impacts. His insights reveal that these decisions contribute to disparities in academic performance and what this means for the future of education.
Curious about the implications of peer effects in education? Join Aleksei Chernulich's kick-off lecture on September 17 at noon (lunch included)!

After months of research, analysis, and dedication, I'm pleased to announce that I've submitted my dissertation for my Economics and Politics degree at the University of Manchester! 🎉
Titled "The Impact of Austerity in the UK," this project delved deep into the intricate economic and political landscape of our nation. Exploring the effects of austerity measures implemented over the past decade, I've examined their ramifications on various sectors, communities, and socioeconomic dynamics.
Through extensive data collection, analysis and critical evaluation, this dissertation offers a comprehensive overview of the multifaceted impacts of austerity on the UK. Insight into the complexities surrounding austerity policies has been truely intruguing to research.
While this process has been both challenging and rewarding, I feel privileged to have been given the oppurtunity to research such a pertinent and timely topic. I'm immensely grateful for the guidance and support of my professors, advisor and peers throughout this these past few months.

Their empirical research demonstrates the fundamental importance of the type of #political and #economic institutions that were introduced during #colonialisation. Their theoretical research has contributed to our understanding of why it is so difficult to #reform#extractive#institutions, while also pointing out some of the circumstances in which this can nevertheless happen. The laureates' work has had a decisive #influence on continued research in both economics and political science. Their insights regarding how institutions influence prosperity show that work to support #democracy and inclusive institutions is an important way forward in the #promotion of #economic#development.
