According to WHO, 'Disease X' is a placeholder name to signify the unknown upcoming potential agent adopted in February 2018 and shortlisted in blueprint priority diseases. Health experts have sounded an alarm about the global threat of the X-agent after the WHO coined this term. It is simply an unnamed agent or microbial threat that could cause a future epidemic even a pandemic and would cause 20 times more fatalities than Covid-19. Did you know, COVID-19 spread in 2020 and claimed about 2.5 million people's lives globally? I am delighted to share that my latest research, which was presented at #IDWeek2023, has now been published in #PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases(#PNTD). The paper is entitled "One-year mortality and morbidities of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome compared with other diseases: A nationwide cohort study in South Korea." Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (#SFTS) is an emerging tick-borne disease in East Asia with a high mortality rate ranging from 6% to 32%. While many SFTS-related deaths occur within the first 30 days, our research reveals that the disease burden extends beyond the acute phase. Patients often face ongoing health challenges even after being discharged from hospital. Our findings underscore the importance of recognising the post-acute burden of SFTS and provide valuable insights for developing comprehensive management strategies for both acute and post-acute care in SFTS patients. Such diseases have the potential to spread to other regions and can be new pandemic threats. I believe that paying attention to these #neglected tick-borne diseases will be extremely beneficial in addressing future global health issues. Many thanks to all the contributors to this research. 😷 Infectious disease (ID) models have been the backbone of policy decisions during the #COVID19 pandemic. However, models often overlook variation in disease risk, health burden, and policy impact across social groups. 👩⚕️ Nonetheless, social determinants are becoming increasingly recognized as fundamental to the success of control strategies overall and to the mitigation of disparities. 📰 In this recent systematic review of 19 ID modelling guidelines, Miqdad Asaria and colleagues outline specific recommendations for policy makers to better consider social determinants to : 1) improve the predictive accuracy of models 2) understand heterogeneity of disease burden and policy impact 3) contextualize decision making 4) address inequalities, and 5) assess implementation challenges.
