🌍18 to 24 November marks World AMR Awareness Week, shedding light on the critical issue of Antimicrobial🌎 Resistance (AMR). AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve over time, rendering medications ineffective. This phenomenon poses a significant challenge in treating infections, leading to severe illnesses and elevated risks of disease transmission and mortality. The global community recognized the urgency of addressing antibiotic resistance at the Sixty-eighth World Health Assembly in May 2015. A comprehensive action plan was adopted to combat the escalating threat posed by AMR. Central to this plan is the imperative to enhance awareness and comprehension of AMR through robust communication, education, and training initiatives. World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) serves as a pivotal global campaign observed annually to foster understanding and awareness of AMR. By promoting best practices among the public, One Health stakeholders, and policymakers, WAAW aims to mitigate the proliferation and dissemination of AMR. Together, we can strive to curb the advancement of antimicrobial resistance and safeguard public health. #AMRAwarenessWeek #Join_the_fight.

Dive into the latest UPMC HealthBeat article where Karin E. Byers, MD, MS, Associate Chief of Clinical Care and Clinical Director of the ID Division, breaks down the crucial differences between Tuberculosis (TB) and Nontuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM). TB, though rare in the US, remains a significant global health concern, spreading through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. In contrast, NTM, found in our environment, typically doesn't cause illness unless an individual has underlying health issues or a weakened immune system. Discover more about these diseases, their impact on lung health, and why understanding the distinction matters.
