In general, we have seen further market growth in the current year. In the three areas of global container fleet (7.117 active cargo ships in the container trades), fleet capacity (30.86 Mteu) and vessel orderbook capacity (7.76 Mteu), we are recording historic record figures. Year-on-year growth is also up by more than 10% compared to the previous year. The bottom line is that 2024 can be considered a successful year, especially from the shipping companies' perspective. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵? It is difficult to say, as economic success is measured by various factors. However, the ten global shipping companies that have joined forces in the three alliances 2M Agreement, Ocean Alliance and THE Alliance with an overall market share of more the 86 percent, are certainly among the biggest beneficiaries with core margins up to 20 percent in the first half of 2024 alone. But, however, it is questionable if this trend will continue in the coming years. This is because freight rates have returned to pre-Covid levels, but costs have risen significantly in comparison. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝘀? In fact, shipping companies are currently facing several challenges. Take the situation in the Red Sea: due to the threat posed by the Hutis, most ships are choosing the longer route via the Cape of Good Hope. This is safe, but costs two weeks of additional transit times. In addition, there are delays due to slow steaming or delays in port clearance, for example due to strikes. In the US #supplychain, drivers waiting for more than 2 hours at distribution centers results in 7%+ more trucks on the road to make up for inefficiencies created by servicing inbound and outbound loads not to mention the actual cost to the truck driver in lost wages and higher costs. MPP Focus (Part Deux) - Port Call Intensity Across the Globe One way to look at the deployment of the global MPP fleet is to measure the number of unique vessels in a region and compare that against the total number of port calls made. Quite naturally, certain areas of the world have much higher port call intensity than others, i.e. higher degree of import and export activity, but how does it really look? The map shows the correlation between the average # of unique vessels in a region vs the total number of port calls per month in the past 13 months. Some areas are naturally more "transit areas" which means a high degree of vessels, but less port call activity per vessel on average. In essence, the higher the delta between ships and port calls, the more cargo operation is present. In terms of ranking the various geographic regions on port call frequency, we see: ⬆ Europe (N.Cont) and Baltic Sea are the two areas with the highest port call frequency with about a 1:3 ratio. This is also due to the fact that we cover specifically the European Short Sea market in-depth in our tool. Smaller vessels mean more frequent port calls. Did you know that we cover over 600 individual ports in these two regions alone? Moving into the deep sea space, we observe the ship to port call ratio: ⬆Far East: 0.6 ⬆Oceania: 0.6 ⬆Mediterranean Sea: 0.6 -> yes a transit area but certainly lots of ports calls (and also part of EU Short Sea) ⬆ South America West Coast: 0.7 ⬆ Gulf of Mexico: 0.7 ⬆North America West Coast: 0.8 ⬆South America East Coast: 0.9 🔄 South East Asia: 1.0 -> balanced (but also transit area) 🔄 Caribbean Sea: 1.0 -> balanced (but also transit area) ⬇ Black Sea: 1.2 ⬇ Africa West Coast: 1.2 ⬇ Middle East 1.3 ⬇ Africa East Coast: 1.6 ⬇ India Subcontinent 2.1 ⬇ Africa South/Cape: 3.2 -> massive increase due to Red Sea There are many ways to Rome and depending on which route you take, the journey will be different.
