🚨 Denmark has revealed Gefion, its most advanced AI supercomputer. The supercomputer which is named after a goddess from Danish mythology was unveiled by Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, alongside Denmark's King Frederik X. Gefion is packed with 1,528 high-powered Nvidia GPUs, which make it extremely capable of handling advanced computing tasks. Gefion will be operated by the Danish Center for AI Innovation, and it will be used for groundbreaking research in areas like drug development, quantum computing, and energy efficiency. I just got back from The Economist "Commercializing Quantum" event in London, and I had to share my thoughts. It was an intense 2 days of science, breakthroughs and ambition. Here’s a breakdown of the highlights: *Quantinuum's Big Reveal* Quantinuum stole the spotlight with the release of their new stable quantum chip, which boasts an impressive 99.9% reliability. Ilyas Khan, KSG from Quantinuum said “if we think there are supply shortages for NVIDIA GPUs today, just wait until we see the demand for Quantum Processing Units (QPUs) in the next year or two” watch those stock prices 📈. *IBM's Quantum App Store* IBM will launch an App Store for Quantum by the end of 2024. MY OPENING REMARKS AT 25th Optica EXECUTIVE FORUM. Many of you asked to get highlights of our meeting on Monday, March 25th. They will follow. In the meantime, here’s how it opened. I asked the audience to “Raise your hand if AI has NOT already impacted your business.” Maybe this is why most of you didn’t. Do you know what this is? This chart was shown last week when Nvidia held its GTC conference in the same convention centre as OFC. In fact, it shows the growth of Invidia's stock price from $36 in May 2018 to US$943 last Friday. Here’s how quickly things are moving at NVIDIA. But we also know that optics and photonics play a critical role in the success of AI. This explains why many of the CEOs in this room, including our first speaker, Matt Murphy of Marvell Technology, are partnering with Nvidia and other AI pioneers. AI is already impacting end users – our customers. Take the example of Tim Höttges is CEO of Deutsche Telekom. At MWC he revealed that AI has enabled a 50% improvement in customer service and a 75% increase in productivity for Fiber to the Home build-out planning. Höttges also addressed the challenges associated with AI, including data privacy concerns and the risk of AI-generated inaccuracies or "hallucinations” of anywhere from 3 to 27% in current AI systems. That’s clearly a serious problem that needs to be solved. But it is clear that economic and sustainability factors around AI already affect decisions by network operators and data centre owners when deciding to upgrade. ONE FINAL REMARK With a market value soaring to a staggering US$600 billion, photonics now commands a presence rivalling that of the venerable microelectronics industry. Yet, despite its monumental significance, photonics remains hidden from the public eye, obscured from mainstream media, politics, and investment circles. In a world where money often follows the loudest voices rather than the projects disrupting the status quo, success in business is rarely a predictable process—it is usually a mixture of luck, experimentation, and instinctive guesswork. Yet, despite the undeniable success of experimentation, politicians and many investors demand reasons right from the beginning to justify funding. But there is NO robust scientific process that inevitably leads to progress.  Optics and photonics are at risk of becoming sidelined—the little brother of big trends. This is why Optica wants to ensure that we raise the profile of our industry amongst decision-makers and serious investors on a global scale. But I have good news. I’m pleased to say that the inaugural Global Photonics Economic Forum has been scheduled for October 1 & 2, 2024. Other Emerging Materials: Beyond GaN, materials like graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are being explored for their potential to revolutionize semiconductor performance and miniaturization. Additional Considerations: Quantum Computing 🧬 While still in its infancy, quantum computing represents a paradigm shift that could bypass many of the limitations faced by classical semiconductor technologies. Quantum processors use quantum bits (qubits) to perform computations that would be infeasible for classical systems. Neuromorphic Computing 🧠 Inspired by the human brain, neuromorphic computing architectures aim to achieve higher efficiency for specific AI tasks. These systems use analog signals to mimic neural networks, offering potential breakthroughs in power consumption and processing speeds. AI and Machine Learning in Chip Design 🤖 Utilizing AI and machine learning to optimize chip design and manufacturing processes can lead to significant improvements in performance and efficiency. AI-driven design automation can reduce the time and resources required to develop next-generation semiconductors. Economic and Environmental Sustainability 🌍 As the semiconductor industry advances, considering the economic and environmental impact is crucial. A new breakthrough in quantum communication allows for holographic messages to be sent securely and selectively erased after transmission. In a study presented by Jensen Li at the University of Exeter on August 21, 2024, at the SPIE Optics + Photonics conference, researchers developed quantum holograms using entangled photons and a metasurface—a 2D material with unique properties. These quantum light signals are inherently secure, as intercepting them destroys their quantum states. By passing one of the entangled photons through the metasurface, they encoded holographic images, while the second photon, passed through a polarised filter, controlled which parts of the image were revealed or erased. This technology, which allows for selective message deletion, holds great promise for secure communications and quantum cryptography. Andrew Forbes, from the University of the Witwatersrand, noted that such compact quantum technology could eventually be integrated into smartphones. Beyond secure communication, this method may also have applications in medical imaging, particularly for viewing microscopic biological structures. The research opens the door to more compact and practical quantum technologies.
