Celebrating 25 years and 25 libraries! Last week, we celebrated the opening of the anniversary exhibition “ON THE EDGE – The Black Diamond 25 years” at the Det Kgl. Bibliotek | Royal Danish Library. The Black Diamond stands as an iconic monolith, heralding a new era in modern library design. Its influence still resonates globally, serving as an enduring source of inspiration for the international library community. Today, it has evolved from a bold vision to a cultural beacon, drawing professionals, tourists, and users alike to experience the spaces, cultural activities, and proximity to the water. For us, the Black Diamond holds a special place in our hearts – it was our first big-scale cultural project, which sparked what has since become an extensive library portfolio with projects all over the world; from the Goethe Institute in Dakar, Senegal, to the transformation of Australia’s oldest and most visited public library State Library Victoria. From DOKK1 in Aarhus, Denmark, to Tūranga Christchurch Central Library in New Zealand and Halifax Central Library in Canada, our projects span every scale and context, from interiors, and extensions to transformations. Libraries are the cultural hubs of our time, offering more than just book storage. They remain vital platforms for cultural activities, knowledge sharing, social bonding, and community building. They provide spaces for contemplation and opportunities for individuals to be alone, together, or alone-together. #shl #schmidthammerlassen #librarydesign #libraryarchitecture #libraries #fosteringstrongcommunities #culturalresonance

The International Jury of the EUROPEAN PRIZE FOR URBAN PUBLIC SPACE 2024 has chosen the 10 finalists of this edition, 5 in the General category and 5 in the Seafronts category. The projects selected are located in Belgium, Spain, Georgia, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Switzerland. Most correspond to medium sized cities, showing that sensibility and attempts to promote quality public spaces exist throughout European territory, beyond big cities. A total of 297 projects, corresponding to 35 European countries, were submitted, reflecting the important project activity that takes place in European public space, essential for the development of cities. The European Prize for Urban Public Space is an honorary biennial competition that, since 2000, has recognized the best interventions in the creation, transformation and recovery of public spaces in European cities. This edition exceptionally incorporates the Seafronts category in response to the particular vulnerability of coastal cities to climate change and in the framework of the Cultural Regatta, the programme of activities promoted by Barcelona City Council to accompany the celebration of the America’s Cup in the city. On 9 September, the 5 finalists in the Seafronts category, and on 28 October those in the General category will present their projects to the Jury. The winning works in the two categories will be announced on 29 October. All the events will take place at the CCCB and will be open to the public. #The_Unbuilt_Forest (just) a Proposal for İKSV .., #colloboration with Refik Akyuz Rana Ozturk Irem Sozen #SerkanAka manythanks 🙌 İdil Mersin Zeynep Beyza Gergin The Unbuilt Forest project uses “the forest” as a #metaphor to engage with the urban environment as both designed areas for certain purposes, while also offering a sense of wilderness that is organically formed through the active engagement of its inhabitants in the use and transformation of public sites beyond the intended purpose of the built environment. /.../ Variations allow for the formation of multiple relationships, slow adaptation through direct experience, and thus the enhancement of the vitality of all agents: human and non-human. /.../ These spaces can set examples for initiating new public areas that are not fixed by their functionality and a specific community, but that are relatively uncontrolled and flexible –functioning more like heterotopic spaces of difference as discussed by Foucoult and Lefevbre– open for civic engagement in the design, planning and use of urban spaces in a way that reflects the diversity of their users. /.../ While this wild structure resembles the natural form of a reptile-like animal, the surrounding spaces will be in the grid order of urban structures, spatially representing the encounter of order and wilderness in the exhibition. special thanks to #sılatanilli @labiennale #iksv #iksvseveseve

👋 Meet the HeriTACE project partners! 🙌 Today, we introduce you to the City of Ghent (Stad Gent), Belgium. 🔎 Ghent is a city of almost 270,000 inhabitants, and with its surface area of about 156 km² it is the second largest city in Flanders. It has a medieval core, which expanded very strongly in the 19th century. The numerous characteristic terraced houses from that period, often in new streets and landscaped neighbourhoods, are still defining features of the city. The Urban Archaeology and Heritage Conservation Service monitors heritage values in restorations and renovations of the city's architectural heritage, including these row houses. At the same time, the Environmental and Climate Service realises the long-term goal of the climate-neutral city by 2050. Ghent provides HeriTACE with concrete research cases and sites. It continuously tests the research and measures against real situations and heritage values, and against the urban climate policy. The City will implement conclusions and tools in its operations and policies, and actively participate in the dissemination of results.
