Wrapping up an interesting working experience with the Aquarium industry here in Oldenburg. The fish and aquarium trade continues to be a debated area for its impacts on reef communities and the carbon footprint of the industry. The time spent working behind the scenes of the colourful aquariums gave me some interesting food for thought on the pros and cons that exist here. The awareness and knowledge generated from keeping these animals is immense. I was impressed by the level of research undertaken by private aquarium keepers for the proper upkeep of these artificial ecosystems. However, that does not cancel out the impacts on natural ecosystems (e.g. removal of key species) and the consequences of travel and transport (e.g. plastic packaging). The aquarium trade continues to be a valuable source of income for countries. An example of this is Sri Lanka and its export of ornamental fish, with fishermen specialising in the finding and catching of marine and freshwater species. We therefore need to consider a sustainable approach while maintaining the support for local economies. Soil Case Study: Pago de Carraovejas An article by Vinetur highlights the commitment of Pago de Carraovejas to ecological viticulture through the concept of living soils. This approach views soil as a dynamic ecosystem full of life, where biodiversity, including microorganisms, is essential for maintaining stability and efficient resource use. "Pago de Carraovejas uses precision tools to manage their vineyard and has implemented techniques to study soil microbial variability, aiming to enhance soil quality and, consequently, improve the quality of their wine.” The study's authors note these practices can serve as a model for vineyards in Spain and globally, supporting environmental preservation and producing high-quality wines. As the wine industry faces climate change and soil degradation challenges, prioritizing soil health and microbial diversity offers a promising way forward. The bioregion of the South Veluwe Watershed (around Wageningen, Ede and Renkum) is one of the Netherlands’ oldest bio-cultural territories. Do you want to know more about Stroomgebied Zuid-Veluwe? As in other places in the Netherlands, from the Ice Age onwards, the area was characterised by a mix of hunting-gathering and forest farming. But when the Roman soldiers came, people started to lose their plant knowledge, their territorial economies, their collective relations to their place, and their spirituality connected to nature. This marked the start of colonisation, extraction, patriarchism and disintegration, which continues until today. However, in the South Veluwe bioregion, a substantial reservoir of ancient knowledge, practices and places is still alive, that resonates with all of life. It is not without reason that many agro-ecological pioneers are located in the territory. A number of residents and organizations are involved in ecology, agriculture, health, education and culture. In this learning session, Edo and Janneke will share how residents are connecting these initiatives, strengthening a sense of community and belonging, and building a territorial economy that serves life. Live and let live. This is how we would like to start this round of presentations. Today we bring you Ignacio Vaquero Lopez, sales agent for #Africa and the #Middle #East. Iñaki is a true adventurer. He has travelled to more than 35 countries all over the region and, of all of them, what stands out the most is how alike and different we all are at the same time. Curious by nature, he embarks on many of his trips alone, accompanied by books that tell him thousands of stories. For adventures, though, his life. Visiting Namibia, one hot day walking in the middle of the road, with no water and a long way to go, he met a resident who invited him to have dinner and to use his vehicle to discover the country's desert. Travelling is part of his nature. When he was younger, he lived for a year in the #United #States on a farm during the ‘corn belt’ era, which taught him to appreciate #agriculture. An #agronomist by vocation and with a master's degree in deficit #irrigation, for Iñaki life is green because it reminds him of the countryside and the places where he develops #projects with a high social impact. Grilled fish from the Gulf countries is one of his favourite foods. However, this does not make him forget his children and his wife, whom he misses the most when he is on a business visit. Looking back, he points out that the trade fair he has been to most is GreenTech #Amsterdam, but his favourite will always be Fruit Attraction in #Madrid because of the large international attendance there. And that is one of the things he enjoys the most, being able to accumulate experiences in countries that have managed to maintain their idiosyncrasies despite foreign influences.
