The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality National Advisory Council - which was held in advance of AcademyHealth's Annual Research Meeting - delved into a variety of topics including the future of health services research, strategies to promote age-friendly care, consumer experience measurement modernization, and care for American Indian/Native Alaskan birthing persons. What was clear throughout the entire 1.5 days was 1) a strong focus on ensuring partnerships with diverse research and community groups, 2) the need to strengthen communication/dissemination best-practices, and 3) grant-making must promote implementation of learnings. Abel Ang this is very insightful. This advice goes beyond application for government grants. Highly applicable for medtech startups vying n pitching for early stage investment.
I decided to write this post after I spent an afternoon listening to highly talented clinicians pitch their projects to the panel for Ministry of Health (Singapore)'s Clinician-Innovator-Award(CIA)... 1) Presentation. Most grants have a format. But please make sure that your presentation has a strong narrative, whilst adhering to the format and time allocated. People remember stories, not stats. 2) Tech. Don't dwell on the tech or the intellectual property. Focus on the problem you are trying to solve and why the health system will benefit from your project. 3) Audience. Research the panel(decision makers) you are pitching to. It helps in how you answer the questions asked, especially on what you need to elaborate, and what you can assume is known. 4) Commercialization. Find a way to independently benchmark the commercial value of the project you are doing. Is the commercial partner that you are working with a market leader? Are they capable to do the commercial rollout? How else can you help the panel triangulate that you have the commercial chops to succeed? 5) Questions. As you answer the questions posed, find a way to reiterate the strengths of your project and why you should be funded. The Q&A is your last word before you are evaluated - make it count! The CIA award has funded many excellent clinician-innovators over the years. I'm writing this post in the hope that even more clinicians will get the funding they need to unleash a wave of clinical innovations in Asia. Maybe it has relevance beyond grant funding too. #Pitch #Clinician #Innovation Link to the CIA website and panel members: https://loom.ly/QheVylw

🌍 What does it take to successfully run clinical trials in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs)? Inspired by the ICTMC held in Edinburgh from September 30 to October 3, I had the opportunity to learn about running clinical trials in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). Here are my key takeaways: 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘆: Utilising geographical data enhances site selection and participant enrolment strategies, ensuring trials effectively reach the right populations. 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘀: Understanding the local context through firsthand visits allows for tailored support and effective capacity building at trial sites. 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗕: Developing contingency plans for unpredictable events is crucial. Leveraging past experiences can significantly enhance operational resilience. 𝗧𝘄𝗼-𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴: Engaging with local stakeholders and actively listening to their insights fosters collaboration and ensures trials align with the community's best interests. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Identifying potential risks early and formulating mitigation strategies helps navigate the unique challenges that LMICs present. (This is required always, isn't it?) Are you running clinical trials in Low and Middle-Income Countries? What are your insights?💡 #clinicalresearch #ICTMC24 #health
