💡 Canadian Rental Housing Crisis: A call for a Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Canada faces a severe rental housing shortage with minimal new affordable units being built. Implementing a Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) similar to the U.S. could address this. The LIHTC would encourage private and nonprofit sector investment in low-income housing by providing tax credits. This would create a sustainable solution to increase affordable rental housing, using private sector expertise to manage and build these units. ℹ️ Source of Information 👇 https://lnkd.in/ekY-_uYn #AffordableHousing #HousingCrisis #TaxCredit #CanadaHousing #RentalHousing #LowIncomeHousing #HousingSolutions #TaxCredits #SustainableHousing #NonprofitHousing #AffordableRentals #HousingShortage #CanadaHousingCrisis #BuildAffordableHousing #EconomicPolicy #SocialHousing #HousingForAll

Premier Eby's $18 Million hush money. The "Envisioning" money that David Eby's BC NDP Government distributed to 5 Regional Districts and 14 First Nations came with an indemnity clause that it could not be used against the provincial government, but that didn't mean it couldn't be used for legal purposes against the Federal Government and the Island Corridor Foundation, a non-profit collective of the 5 Regional Districts and the 14 First Nations the railway passes through. It's widely known that the Federal Government put the Provincial Government as lead in terms of "dealing with" the Vancouver Island Railway that was a key component of the creation of the province of British Columbia and Canada, and for dealing with the impacts of those actions on the indigenous communities... aka reconciliation. You simply can’t tell me that after 18 years of advocation for rail plus trails, a vision put together by First Nations and Regional Districts in the first place (2006), that it needed to be envisioned again. It’s become quite obvious that on the lead-up to the BC election, David Eby chose to wash his hands of it all and spread some hush money around to push the timeline back beyond the election date of October 19th, 2024; into Christmas and February 2025 to report on outcomes. The timeframe for that money was the calendar year (2024), and the end of the calendar year is approaching. You bet your bottom dollar that an RFI request will be going in to find out what all that money was actually used for. It’s easy to dismiss heating fuel poverty in July, especially as we are mere weeks removed from the heat dome that lingered overhead, resulting in sweltering temperatures across the country’s eastern half. But if you think back a bit further, you’ll likely recall two spring snow and ice storms that left hundreds of thousands of people without electricity, many for several days, and you may remember just how important having a reliable heat source is in Maine. Winter can be brutal for many Mainers as fuel costs for heating their homes stretch their already thin budgets to a breaking point. Add in increasingly damaging weather patterns that cause property damage and knock out power, often resulting in food losses that only compound the financial strain that winter can bring. According to a 2019 Maine Low-Income Home Energy Burden Study, low-income households in Maine have an average energy burden of 19%, much higher than the 6% average for all Maine households.(...) Declining budgetary allocations for land reform continue to hamper the state's ability to effectively drive a successful land reform programme, leaving many land-dependent communities entrenched in poverty and frustration. The adoption, in 1996, of the Proactive Land Acquisition Strategy (PLAS) by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) sparked optimism for a revitalised land redistribution effort. However, this optimism has waned as reports emerge of numerous underperforming farms and extensive fallow land still awaiting redistribution. The noble intentions of the government to empower communities through land redistribution have been thwarted by various challenges, including among others, corruption among state officials, bureaucratic hurdles, favouritism towards elites, limited access to funding, implementation inefficiencies, and external factors like crime and deteriorating infrastructure. Since 2012, the non-profit organisation, Vumelana Advisory Fund has been gathering valuable insights into the obstacles facing communities seeking land restitution. By creating and effectively executing practical solutions, they have begun to overcome these barriers. https://lnkd.in/gW7WCufW

👇What are the big challenges this winter, and how can we come together to solve them? 1️⃣The Budget Cuts to winter fuel allowance means that those on the threshold of receiving support may be pushed into fuel poverty 2️⃣Bills Fuel bills have remained stubbornly high, meaning many who've struggled to heat their homes will continue to do so this year 3️⃣Isolation People, especially those in rural areas, are more subject to isolation during winter - community connection is vital during these times 4️⃣Hardship For those only just getting by, the winter months can be very cruel. Those who are homeless, or risk becoming so, need places to go for respite and support In the face of these challenges, our Community Hot-Spots are more essential than ever for struggling households across Norfolk. Help us keep these safe, warm spaces open by supporting the Surviving Winter Appeal. Together, we can make a difference➡️ https://lnkd.in/eUZTcBqq

💦 We have another 500 FREE water butts to give away! Last year, applications opened for Blackpool residents to receive a free water butt. We've now given away over 1000! Unfortunately, as stocks were limited, not everyone got a chance to apply. But we're now pleased to announce we have another 500 water butts to give away for free! Water butts help capture and save rainwater to be reused for a variety of purposes including watering plants, car washing, refilling ponds and cleaning windows. They reduce the risk of flooding in heavy rain and can save you money on your water bills if you're on a meter. The water butt can be delivered to your home or you can opt for collection. Volunteers can help assist with installation if needed. Applications open Wednesday 7 February from 8am. Stocks are limited. For more info, and to apply from Wednesday 7 February, visit ⇢ https://lnkd.in/evMx24qb This scheme is for Blackpool residents only. Funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. #UKSPF

As housing needs continue to rise, housing aid has hit the lowest level in nearly 25 years. In stark contrast to growth in other safety net programs, fewer of the poorest tenants are getting housing assistance. The Low-Income Housing Tax Credit has helped build several million subsidized apartments, but most are still not affordable to the neediest renters without additional aid. Read more in this The New York Times article here.
