We are pleased to announce the 8th edition of the Photonic Integration Week (PIW), that will take place in Valencia, from the 3 to the 5 of March 2025, at Universitat Politècnica de València (Ciudad Politécnica de la Innovación, Auditorio del Cubo Azul). Since 2017, the event gathers key players of the supply chain at international level, combining academy, research organizations, industry, and government bodies around photonic integration technology. Integrated photonics brings complementary micro-chip technologies, in symbiosis with micro-electronics, to sectors such as telecommunications, aerospace, automotive, advanced healthcare instrumentation, civil construction and consumer devices. Twente is set to become the centre of a global revolution in photonic chip technology with the development of New Origin, an advanced production facility for photonic chips. Thanks to a grant from the province of Overijssel and the involvement of Oost NL as a shareholder, the plans are now becoming reality with the construction of the plant already underway. Emerging from decades of expertise in the region, including the pioneering work of the University of Twente's MESA+ Institute, New Origin is positioning Twente as an international leader in integrated photonics. 𝐁𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐎𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬, enabling applications in ultra-fast communications for AI, medical devices, consumer products, and quantum technology. The University of Twente Holding (UTH), a key player in knowledge valorisation for UT, has driven this initiative from the start. In recent months, UTH has worked closely with regional partners like Oost NL and companies such as Bronkhorst High-Tech B.V., Demcon, LioniX International, and Micronit to develop the business plan. 📯 🏆 Pilot Photonics is thrilled to announce that its #partnership with the Munster Technological University is bearing fruit. Last week, we were awarded the #Industry #Research Collaboration #Award from #MTU for our #exciting work in developing a new comb #laser for applications in #datacentres and #AI / #ML. Our CEO, William Oppermann, received the award at MTU from Dr. Siobhán Mac Sweeney, Head of Research, who said, "To distinguish a winner, we focused on the impact already generated by the research, the potential for future impact and the wider #benefits of the research to the #economy and #society. The Pilot Photonics project stood apart because of the scale and investment to date in the on-going research and the potential for significant revenue generation down the line as the work continues. Through collaborating with Dr. William Whelan-Curtin (WWC) and his team at MTU, Pilot Photonics is planning to develop a new type of comb laser that will increase their product range. A patent has already been filed to protect the technology developed by the team to date and this will be a very valuable asset for the company. The societal #benefit from this research has the potential to improve #optical #metrology, frequency-chain generation, optical atomic clocks, high-precision #spectroscopy, and more precise #GPS #technology. It was for this impressive and far-reaching impact that we arrived at Pilot Photonics as the winning entry." William Oppermann said, “One of the key spin-outs for Pilot through the collaborative project with MTU is to develop a new comb laser architecture. We have specifically designed this #innovation to target #datacentre and AI/ML applications. 🚀 Major Boost for Photonic Chip Technology in Twente! 🚀 Last Friday, the Provincie Overijssel announced that New Origin will receive support for the further development of our production facility. Yesterday, the Ministerie van Economische Zaken revealed that €15 million from Europe will be available for #twente to establish a pilot plant for photonic chips. The University of Twente will use this investment to modernize equipment at the MESA+ Nanolab, enabling a faster transition from research and development to production at New Origin. As Guus Rijnders mentioned in De Twentsche Courant Tubantia, “If the prototypes we create at the UT perform well, the aim is for New Origin to produce them in mass. It all connects together.” 🤝 As Twan Korthorst in Het Financieele Dagblad said: "These developments are great news for New Origin and the ChipTech Twente cluster, bringing our ambition to start rolling out photonic chips by late 2026 a big step closer. The European funding will lower barriers to adopting this new technology, encouraging increased activity and demand for production capacity. The European Commission and Chips JU select PIXEurope consortium to lead the European Pilot Line on Advanced Photonic Integrated Circuits Coordinated at the continental level by ICFO from Barcelona, and with the support of the Ministerio para la Transformación Digital y de la Función Pública of Spain, and the Generalitat de Catalunya, PIXEurope will mobilize investments of about 400 million euros to offer unique technological capabilities to industry, with the aim of enhancing its capacity regarding photonic chips and positioning Europe as a global leader. Within Spain, entities from the autonomous communities of Catalonia, Valencia, Madrid and Galicia are directly participating, and the entire national community in the sector will benefit. It was a great pleasure to participate in the annual Photonics21 meeting in Brussels. It was a cornerstone for the photonics community, focusing on the bright future of European Photonics, its competitive advantage and the critical role it can play for technology revolutions in many fields if our society. At nanoPHAB we are at the forefront of the photonics revolution, specializing in custom nanofabrication for free space and integrated photonics in many materials and semiconductors. With thousands of devices and prototypes already developed and fabricated, our work has propelled advancements in diverse sectors like quantum technology, sensing, metrology, and bio-photonics. The challenges involved in high-tech innovation as well as the need for dedicated manufacturing centers and skilled professionals, highlight the importance of academic-industrial collaborations within the European photonics ecosystem. Since last April 2024, nanoPHAB partnered with NanoLab at the Eindhoven University of Technology, in order to provide cost-effective nanofabrication services to better support academic groups and research-based projects in the Eindhoven area and beyond. As we participate in Photonics21, we are energized to contribute and align with the goals of the European photonics community.
