The proposed new Government tax on philanthropic donations to Australian universities is such an astoundingly terrible idea that it easily belongs in a parody series like Utopia. Australia is already trailing behind our peers in terms of philanthropic donations, with giving estimated at 0.81% of GDP. Comparatively, the UK, Canada, New Zealand, and the US are all ahead of us*. The recently published Australian Universities Accord has some great analysis and ideas, but introducing a new tax on philanthropy is not one of them. The Government should create a policy framework that encourages philanthropy rather than hinders it. Australian universities play a crucial role in shaping the future of our nation, and anything that discouraging donations is a step in the wrong direction. *Australian giving is estimated at 0.81% of GDP, which is less than the UK (0.96%), Canada (1%), New Zealand (1.84%) and the US (2.1%). #philanthropy #universities Antonia Lindsay

On Sunday 6th October, I will be taking part in Palace to Palace and cycling 90 miles from Buckingham Palace to Windsor Castle and raising fund for the Prince’s Trust. The Prince's Trust has tailored programmes and provides long-term support give young people the practical skills and emotional resilience to pick themselves back up and create their own positive futures. The recent Class of Covid report reveals almost half of young people in the UK (49%) feel anxious about their future on a daily basis, with 59% agreeing it feels frightening for their generation. Findings suggest the impact of the pandemic and now a cost-of-living crisis is taking its toll on young people, as 45% agree anxiety around recent political and economic events affects them daily. More than a third (35%) feel their life is spiralling out of control, and for those from lower income backgrounds, this increases to 41%. If you'ld like to support their work then please make a donation here: https://lnkd.in/exesMyg5

Want to know what funders are really thinking? Here are seven insights from our Head of Development, Trusts and Foundations Jason Smith 👇
Over the last few weeks I’ve been sharing some of the funder insights that the team and I at Better Story have had from speaking to funders, this is all of them together! 1. (unsurprisingly) they have A LOT of applications! They often volunteer their time and spend their free time reading applications, this means that unfortunately they often spend very little time reading applications This means making key information stand out and making the content as easy to read as possible is crucial. 2. Information over Presentation Applications need to focus on providing strong information rather than perfectly presenting the information This means you don’t need to use the full word count if a message can be conveyed more concisely. 3."Dent in the Cause" Applications should focus less on convincing the funder of the “worthiness” of the charity, and more on showing the specific impact or "dent" the charity is making in that cause. 4.Avoiding Jargon Avoid using jargon and don’t assume that the reader has prior knowledge. A good test is whether your case for support can be summarised in two clear sentences. 5. Partnerships Mentioning existing partnerships with others (even if they are applying for the same funding!) is an effective way to capture the interest of potential new funders. 6. Current Funding If you have already secured some funding then mention this in the application, it shows interest and encourages the funder to “complete” the funding amount 7. Spelling isn’t really that important oh and neither is perfect grammar! What is important is the impact you want to make! Whether it’s developing skills and training to enter the workforce, investing in buildings and equipment, or providing services to fill gaps left by the public sector, the voluntary sector plays a significant part in the UK economy. However, measurement of its economic contribution is inherently complex, meaning the role it plays is often undervalued. A new ESCoE project in collaboration with the Fraser of Allander Institute at the University of Strathclyde and VCSE Observatory at Nottingham Trent University will explore the problems with measuring the voluntary sector. Find out more in this blog from Ciara Crummey. 👉 https://lnkd.in/g-h_sHpW #Research #VoluntarySector #Charities Office for National Statistics

Please help me to support The Prince's Trust by sponsoring my Palace to Palace cycle ride and sharing my page. Just a £20 donation could provide a young person with an experienced youth worker for an hour, building their confidence, resilience and motivation during this time.
