Plenty to reflect on from last week’s IORMA - Futures Centre webinar. Focus was on impact of AI - particularly voice assistants and speech processing technology - on specific sectors and roles such as customer service and technical support. It was a joy to take part as one of the panelists, here’s a few post-event reflections: ➡️ Generative AI is providing new ways of accessing factual information. So, for people working in customer service and technical support roles, it is less about accumulating knowledge and more about good judgement and good communication, about being able to show empathy and build rapport. ➡️ The focus is on effective reskilling programmes. Being able to deliver these at a pace that matches the velocity of change in the external landscape is one of the biggest challenges. For example, the recent ‘The Work That We Want’ report by the World Employment Confederation shows that 78% of business leaders say they simply cannot currently train people fast enough. ➡️ The challenge for the next generation of workers is about being prepared to constantly evolve technical skills in order to harness the benefits of AI in terms of output and productivity. At the same time, a shape-shifting world of work is contributing to rising levels of anxiety. The last Youth Employment UK shows that 50% of young peoe are not confident that they will progress into a good job and that 1 in 3 young people who are currently in work are struggling and feel unprepared. The opportunity for forward-thinking employers is to be proactive in making this transition into work more manageable. ➡️ Building better bridges between education and world of work is the mission. The challenge for Universities and FE Colleges is to ensure that curriculums reflect the change that is happening around us and that tutors are on the cusp of the latest innovations. ‘Career focused’ universities and colleges must be at the vanguard of the #FutureofWork debate. There are also huge opportunities here for HR and recruitment professionals who can help make sense of the evolving workplace ecosystem. One further conclusion from last week’s online gathering was that regular peer to peer exchanges and insight from suject matter experts is a big way forward. So events like the Iorma webinar will become increasingly important as a platform for shared learning and co-creating new solutions to emerging challenges.

A great take away from last evening’s Kinderly session by Tricia Mohamed was the Top skills needed for future employment from the World Economic Forum 2023. These are: Analytical thinking Creative thinking Resilience Flexibility Motivation Self awareness Curiosity. Tricia emphasised the fact that play is the best vehicle for learning and developing these top skills. She continued that play strengthens the brain foundations. This is such a powerful message and one that can strengthen our play pedagogy, as we understand these skills are essential for children’s later years enabling them to make a positive contribution to society. https://lnkd.in/eCtve2f4
