I learned a lot this semester as a contributor for the Historic Structure Report (HSR) for my GSU HIST 8620 Conservation & Historic Building Materials course regarding the house at the Forty Oaks Nature Preserve in Clarkston, Georgia. This course consisted of multiple fieldwork visits, hours of research, and a final presentation that gave me the opportunity to learn a great deal about architectural history (the I-House specifically) and how structures develop. Very insightful course for understanding how buildings change over time. #architecturalhistory #georgiastateuniversity

🏡 Our 17th webinar in the Urban Forests series will zoom in on the concept of Nature-based Thinking - an expansion of Nature-based Solutions. Nature-based Thinking embodies the perspective of nature WITH people, rather than just nature FOR people. By balancing anthropocentric and ecocentric values, as well as the relational values of nature, more healthy and long-term sustainable urban nature solutions may be developed. 📆 30 May ⏰ 15-16 CET 💻 Webinar on Zoom 🔗 register here: https://lnkd.in/eCzCREWa Thomas Randrup, professor in Urban Open Space Management and Geovana Mercado, Postdoctoral researcher from the Department of Landscape Architecture, Planning and Management at SLU Alnarp, are examining the potential value of a deeper form of integration of nature in city planning and management, by exploring how a Nature-Based Thinking (NBT) perspective can broaden, and expand Nature-based Solutions (NBS) frameworks through incorporating local contexts and realities. We hope to see you there! Part of the heritage conservation initiative is the recording of the heritage values of the structures and the role they played for the communities, but also the communication of the findings back to those communities and the wider public. In the following link you can see a teaser video of the short documentary that was produced in 2022 by my Master students of the Departmental Program of Conservation and Restoration of Historic Buildings and Structures, of the University of Cyprus. Heartfelt congratulations are extended to the (now graduated-)students, that surpassed the expectations of the program and engaged in new technologies of communication. ------------------------------------------------------------------ The Melkonian Educational Institute is located approximately three kilometers south of the walled city of Nicosia, in the Municipality of Aglantzia. The complex was built right after the Armenian Genoside (1915-1920) in order to host and educate Armenian orphans from around the world. This documentary deals with the contribution of the Melkonian Educational Institute, both to the Armenian community, but also to the Cypriot society. The Institute reflects a series of values, such as historical, architectural, aesthetic, technological and cultural, which contributed to its declaration as a listed building. This declaration, however, has not been enough for its protection and reuse. Almost 100 years after its construction, the building is currently abandoned in a bad state, while its future is uncertain. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Research, interviews, filming and editing by: Maria Achilleos, Michalis Theodoulides, Savvina Hadjipanteli, Evdokia Koiliari.

The recording of our latest meeting on "Processes of #spatialjustice and politica #urbanism" with Ana Póvoas is now available on our website! Ana presented a collaborative project to envision a more just territory in the future, using a participatory approach. Two projects were discussed, one focusing on creating a network of actors and constructing a collective vocabulary of justice #values, and the other using a "flash method" to generate content quickly. The importance of understanding political urbanism and spatial justice through a comprehensive approach was emphasized, including the need to engage with all urban systems and acknowledge the political dimension of divisiveness about space. Challenges encountered during participatory research experiments were also discussed, such as dealing with unacceptable behaviors, convincing researchers to participate, and finding the best environment to host these processes.
