A remarkable collaboration between our partners, Balfour Beatty plc and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. This major project was commissioned to restore the Grade A listed Palm Houses and Glasshouses, safeguarding 6,000 plant species. Discover more about the restoration of this world-renowned centre for plant science and conservation in Balfour Beatty's video below:
We’re excited to share an update on our work at The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh Biomes project. Awarded via the SCAPE Scotland Civil Engineering framework, the project to restore the Grade A listed Palm Houses and Glasshouses protecting 6,000 plant species is the most significant initiative undertaken in the Garden’s history. As our experts complete work to rejuvenate the historic buildings, we’ve also set out a roadmap to a zero carbon construction site, identifying the gaps and challenges preventing zero carbon construction. Take a look at our video and read our case study to learn more about the restoration of this world-leading centre for plant science and conservation: https://bit.ly/4g6aR63 #BuildingNewFutures #TeamSCAPE #ExpertEngineers SCAPE

We are proud to work with Balfour Beatty plc on The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh Biomes project in a historic effort to preserve the wonderful, important buildings sustainably for future generations. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh project involves replacing 5,000 panes of glass, stripping back and repairing ironwork, stripping paint before adding a new layer, renewing gutters, and replacing some damaged stonework. Because of the buildings' historic character, the project required a bespoke solution. We needed to remove and replace this unique Victorian glazing whilst respecting the integrity of the original structure by accurately modelling and recreating each glass pane. Take a look at the video below and learn more about the amazing work that is being done in restoring the glasshouse and protecting 6,000 plant species. #construction #biomesproject #royalotanicgardenedinburgh #glazing #glasshouse #glass #visionarch

JoLA Wildfire Call until May 15 - Special Issue ECLAS' Journal of Landscape Architecture (JoLA) announces a new call for submissions to a special issue focusing on the long-term challenges that wildfires pose to the next generation of professionals in support of human societies’ targets for an adaptable future in the face of climate change/challenges. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/e_pwPKVJ Potential topics of interest are: · future fire-resilient regional planning and design approaches; · ecosystem evolution, composition and structure; · fire management and community protection; · pre- and post-fire landscape analysis and scenario building; · fire tracking systems; · fire-conscious political and legislative frameworks. However, our interest is broad and not limited to these topics. Please submit abstracts (500 words max., visuals encouraged) on both traditional and unconventional modes of research, practice-based, fieldwork-based, theoretical or historical. Deadline for abstracts is 15 May. Full papers must be written by 2 September. For anyone with an interest in civil engineering and architectural design, but without an engineering degree, this book gives an interesting overview of the issues with civil engineering design and architecture that cause disastrous failures. While the writing isn't the best, it's very insightful and has helped guide my understanding of a number of building and bridge disasters I've had to cover over the years. Why Buildings Fall Down: Why Structures Fail by Mario Salvadori (Author), Matthys Levy (Author), Kevin Woest (Illustrator) https://lnkd.in/gsuEfJqS

I learned a lot this semester as a contributor for the Historic Structure Report (HSR) for my GSU HIST 8620 Conservation & Historic Building Materials course regarding the house at the Forty Oaks Nature Preserve in Clarkston, Georgia. This course consisted of multiple fieldwork visits, hours of research, and a final presentation that gave me the opportunity to learn a great deal about architectural history (the I-House specifically) and how structures develop. Very insightful course for understanding how buildings change over time. #architecturalhistory #georgiastateuniversity
