As part of this month’s genetic counseling awareness activities, we are proud to recognize Kimberly Gall, one of Quest’s many genetic counselors working to make a difference. Kim’s area of expertise is Neurology. Though Kim observed early in her career that genetic counseling wasn’t the most well-known field, she quickly realized it was a perfect fit for her. Because of how vast and varied genetic counseling can be, she aims to stay up-to-date on news in genetics and suggests that aspiring counselors take every opportunity to learn about the field. Learn more about how Kim and her colleagues are making a difference at Quest at https://lnkd.in/eMT2_DZw #GeneticCounselorAwarenessDay #Genechat

Patient education through guideline-based care with genetic counselors is critically important as patients are faced with life changing healthcare decisions. With another great #ASCO in the books, we are sharing some of the research we presented on leveraging real world data (RWD) to assess bilateral mastectomy rates after cancer genetics evaluations with genetic counselors. Read how genetic counseling services helped improve patient outcomes and supported health system services. https://lnkd.in/gUgyZrfV #geneticcounseling

What really is the state of NIH funding for projects in genetic counseling? In this new review piece published in the Journal of Genetic Counseling, our research team explores the major gaps in the funding of genetic counseling research, resources, and training. I am excited to share that this is my first piece as a recognized author! I am grateful I had the opportunity to assist Dr. Heather Zierhut, Megan Kocher, Rachel Mills, and Hiermiela Tsegai during my final year of undergrad on this work. I am hopeful this research will help to advocate for change in funding for genetic counseling research. The link to the article can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gh4ybFFN

My classmate Sam tells some hard and necessary truths in this great blog post.
“If we hesitate to talk about the history and systemic implications of [the genetic counseling] profession’s past and present, we remain stagnant as a profession.” I am so excited to share my recent article in the National Society of Genetic Counselors Perspectives blog, titled “Shattering the Rose-Colored Glasses of Prospective Genetic Counseling Students.” From exploring the genetic counseling profession’s ties to eugenics to examining the dynamics of interpersonal relationships among colleagues, this reflection offers insights into the profession's complexities and challenges. Transparency and honesty are crucial when speaking to prospective genetic counseling students, and it’s essential to acknowledge the profession’s past to shape its future for the better. I want to thank Kim Z. - my biggest supporter throughout this process! Without you this genuinely would not have been possible. A heartfelt thanks to my peers and faculty at Boston University School of Medicine, Division of Graduate Medical Sciences and the NSGC Perspectives editorial team for their encouragement and guidance.
