How many items should your live auction have? Typically I sell about 5 live auction items, but today I'm working on a live auction for a private school...with 19 terrific items! It's common for schools to have longer live auctions because they have such a deep pool of committed and connected donors (parents), so getting great items can be easier. "But doesn't selling 19 items take too long?" you might be thinking. That depends totally on the structure of the evening and its goals. In some parts of the country, fundraising auctions have 30 or even 50 items! 3 things make longer auctions successful: 1) the guests know in advance what to expect that night 2) the items are exciting and in demand 3) the auctioneer entertains even those who aren't bidding. So, how many live auction items are you seeing at events this season?
