#ESG is one of the biggest transformational opportunities of our time - but it can't be an add-on. The moment I heard of sustainability (and then net positive) many-many years ago, I was hooked. I was lucky to learn from Professor Tensie Whelan, Paul Polman and, later, other heroes. Who does not like more kindness to people and planet? However, it is no secret that, even to this day, financial gains and shareholder profit often comes first. This is why the ROSI (Return on Sustainability Investment) methodology, developed at NYU Stern Center for Sustainable Business is useful: it monetises the value of sustainability initiatives. For corporate management, ROSI drives better-performing business - socially, environmentally, and financially. It quantifies the full range of costs and benefits, including intangibles. It lets the numbers and facts speak. For investors, ROSI improves decision-making, valuation, and communications - by better understanding ESG data, assessing where relative value exists in corporate strategies and investments, and better integrating, measuring, and reporting on financial performance driven by ESG strategies.
