Over 9,000 workers at the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) are poised to strike as early as Thursday, June 6, following the release of the Public Interest Commission (PIC) report. The report outlines key recommendations for a settlement, but the clock is ticking for potential job action. CBSA personnel, represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada and the Customs and Immigration Union (PSAC-CIU), voted 96% in favour of striking earlier this month. Mediated negotiations with the Treasury Board and CBSA start June 3, and there is hope for a renewed mandate to address the key issues and avoid a strike. Mark Weber, Customs and Immigration Union National President emphasizes, “Taking job action is always a last resort, but the overwhelming support for our strike mandate – with 96% of our members in favour – shows that we are prepared to do whatever it takes to win a fair contract.” At Radius Logistics, we understand the critical impact this potential strike could have on your shipments. We are keeping a close eye on this situation and will keep you informed of any developments. Stay tuned for updates. #CBSA #StrikeAlert #LogisticsNews #SupplyChain

Canadian customs and immigration agents have voted overwhelmingly to strike over their contract negotiations with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), potentially starting as soon as June 6. The proposal received 96% support from the Border Services group of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC). The last significant action by PSAC members occurred in 2021, almost halting commercial cross-border traffic before a 35-hour negotiating session led to an agreement. This development follows a vote for strike action by railway workers at Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Kansas City at the beginning of May, but a request to review the public safety impact of the labor action has delayed its potential start date. Now, there is a chance these two strikes could take place simultaneously, which would severely impact the flow of shipments in and out of Canada, especially across the U.S.-Canada border. ➤ Follow us for continuing updates on this situation. They include border services officers at airports, land entry points, marine ports, and commercial ports of entry, inland enforcement officers, intelligence officers, investigators, trade officers, and more than 2,000 non-uniformed headquarters staff. #CBSA #borderservices #strike #exports #imports #customscompliance

Canadian border agent strike looms as unions seek better pay, benefits. More than 9,000 border workers could go on strike Thursday. A strike looms for more than 9,000 workers at the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA ), which could disrupt supply chains across North America. The work stoppage for customs and immigration agents could occur as early as Thursday after the recent release of a federal Public Interest Commission report, which set guidelines for a new collective agreement and gave the workers the legal right to strike. CBSA personnel are represented by Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and the Customs and Immigration Union (CIU). “The clock is ticking,” Sharon DeSousa, PSAC national president-elect, said in a news release. “At every opportunity, Trudeau’s Liberal government has refused to put the needs of workers first, and time is running out to avoid sweeping job action.” #CBSA #borderservices #globaltrade #export #travel #transportation #strike https://lnkd.in/gPMcnKCj

CANADA BORDER SERVICE AGENTS SET TO STRIKE CBSA personnel, represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada and the Customs and Immigration Union (PSAC-CIU), voted 96% in favour of taking strike action. With the release of the Public Interest Commission (PIC) report on May 30th, the CBSA will now be in a legal strike position beginning Thursday, June 6th. The border will remain open, as over 90% of CBSA frontline workers are deemed an “essential service” and cannot strike, however, increased wait times and service disruptions are expected due to picketing. As per the PSAC, “Job action by CBSA personnel in 2021 nearly brought commercial cross-border traffic to a standstill, causing major delays at airports and borders across the country and a marathon 36-hour bargaining session to reach an agreement.” Negotiations with the Treasury Board and the CBSA are set to begin Monday, June 3rd, just days before an impending strike. The PSAC have issued a warning to the transportation industry of the impending delays.

More than 9,000 Canada Border Services Agency workers begin job action Friday if agreement not reached https://lnkd.in/eifxbbkn What does this mean for the Clients shipping Cross Border? The border will remain open as most front line border services officers are essential workers, which means they will continue to offer essential services in the event of a strike, the CBSA said in an earlier press release. It could mean work-to-rule action, with employees performing only the minimum amount of work required by their contracts. “Delayed border crossings will reduce production in key employment industries, like the auto sector and others that rely on just-in-time goods deliveries” If you need to get something Urgent, we offer Air Service https://lnkd.in/eXGx6xM6 https://lnkd.in/e9nyKP-z

Tentative agreement averts strike and ensures stability at Canadian border 🇨🇦👷🏻👷🏻♀️ On Tuesday, a tentative agreement was reached between the Canadian government and the union representing Canada’s customs and border security workers, eliminating the threat of a strike that could have complicated cross-border shipping between the U.S. and Canada. The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and the Customs and Immigration Union (CIU) announced that they reached a tentative agreement with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Treasury Board, covering approximately 11,000 workers. A strike by these workers could have significantly slowed cross-border trade, causing truck backups at entry points and threatening production at automotive plants on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border. Carriers on both sides of the border had already begun expediting shipments and taking other measures to avoid supply chain disruptions. The strike, initially scheduled for last Friday, was postponed as negotiations continued between the union and the government, setting a new deadline for this Friday. Details of the tentative agreement will be released on Thursday, according to PSAC and CIU. Sharon DeSousa, PSAC's national president, praised her negotiating team's hard work and emphasized that this tentative agreement reflects their dedication. CIU, representing CBSA personnel in customs, immigration, and trade, is part of PSAC, which represents over 120,000 federal workers employed under the Treasury Board of Canada. A ratification kit will be sent to CIU members on Thursday. CBSA workers have been without a contract for two years, and a brief strike in 2021 caused disruptions at Canadian border crossings and airports. The new agreement includes wage increases and other benefits for employees, according to the Treasury Board.

9,000 members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) along with Customs and Immigration Union (CIU) are set to issue a strike vote starting April 10, 2024. PSAC stated they reached an impasse in bargaining back in September 2023 after nearly two years of negotiations. Members have been without a collective agreement since 2022. If PSCA/CBSA members vote in favor of a strike mandate, supply chains could see potential delays due to service interruptions at the Ports of Entry into Canada. Please see the below link from the Public Service Alliance of Canada Strike votes for over 9,000 workers at Canada Border Services Agency begin April 10. https://lnkd.in/g3EsyrZJ Expeditors continues to correspond with CBSA and Brokers Association and will update through our regular channels.
