Google has unveiled its latest quantum computing chip, Willow, marking a significant breakthrough in the field. This new chip features 105 superconducting qubits and demonstrates unprecedented performance across several metrics[8]. Key Achievements 1. Willow can reduce errors exponentially as it scales up using more qubits, addressing a challenge that has persisted in quantum computing for nearly 30 years[2][9]. 2. The chip performed a standard benchmark computation in under five minutes that would take one of today's fastest supercomputers approximately 10 septillion (10^25) years to complete[1][3]. Willow operates using superconducting transmon qubits, which are tiny electrical circuits exhibiting quantum behavior at extremely low temperatures. These circuits are engineered to function like artificial atoms in a quantum state[2]. The chip's qubits demonstrate coherence times nearly five times better than previous designs. This improvement, combined with advanced machine learning algorithms, enables real-time error correction and exponential error suppression as qubit lattices scale from 3x3 to 7x7 grids[8]. Implications While Willow represents a significant step forward in quantum computing, experts caution that practical applications remain years away[8]. Quantum Computing : Race to the Future Imagine holding a machine that can compute in 5 minutes, operations that might take El Capitan, one of the fastest supercomputers, to figure out over 100,000 years. That is the crazy potential of Google's new quantum chip, Willow. With an improved 𝗰𝗼𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘀, five times better than Sycamore, Willow seems to be more than just a upgrade. People are buzzing about Willow’s potential, talking about the future of computing like it’s something we can barely grasp. At the same time, China’s jumping in with its own 𝟱𝟬𝟬-𝗾𝘂𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿, so the race for quantum supremacy is heating up. But here's the catch, while these advancements are incredible, they come with some serious questions. If quantum systems really live up to their potential, they could 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗥𝗦𝗔-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗿𝘆𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 in no time with brute-force attacks. Are we really on the verge of the future? Honestly, we’re still a long way off from achieving the kind of breakthroughs that would change industries like encryption or logistics. The thing is, qubits, the building blocks of quantum systems, are pretty unstable. They have to work in near 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 and are super error-prone, which means constant fixes are needed to keep things running, slowing things down a lot. Willow tries to tackle this by combining physical qubits into one logical qubit, making it more stable and reliable. One of Willow’s standout features is its ability to do 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Normally, adding more qubits leads to more errors, which is a major roadblock. But Willow’s design actually reduces errors as it scales up. This is huge for quantum error correction and could really make quantum computing more reliable. To sum it up, Willow is showing off some impressive advancements in quantum computing, and while it gives us a sneak peek of what’s to come, we’re still in the early stages. The race in quantum computing is insane, fast-paced, full of breakthroughs, and with insane potential. The future looks promising, but we’re not quite there yet, there’s still a long way to go before we can actually use these systems for practical stuff. Hello, kiddos! THE WILLON IS HEREEEEEE! Are we ready for the quantum revolution? 💥 Richard Feynman, the guy who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965, said: "If you think you understand quantum mechanics, you don’t understand quantum mechanics." And honestly, he was absolutely right. If you think you get it, you probably don’t. 🤣 But Google decided to give it a try anyway and created a Quantum Computing division. Now, almost 20 years later, we have Willow – the supercomputer with the cutest name out there. It's so amazing that it did a calculation in 5 minutes that a regular computer would take 10 septillion years to complete. Yes, you read that right. That’s 10^25! More time than the Universe has existed. A LOT more! And it does even more: the more qubits (quantum bits) we give it, the more accurate it gets. There’s an exponential reduction in errors as it gets more powerful. For those who don’t know, quantum computers operate on the "weirdness" of quantum mechanics – they don’t work like traditional computers, which process information in "0s" and "1s." Qubits, the quantum units of information, can exist in multiple states at once. Instead of completing one task at a time, they can perform many tasks simultaneously thanks to this "to be or not to be" state. Meaning, they can be incredibly fast since there’s no pre-determined value! They’ll pick the value right on the spot! Just to give you an idea, if someone wanted to break Bitcoin’s encryption in 1 day, they'd need 13 million qubits. Willow has 105 qubits. Sounds like a small number, but considering the pace of quantum technology development, that number will grow fast, and traditional encryption might not be so safe for long. Scary 🥲 Seeing how serious this is, more people jumped into the race: China has invested over $15 billion in quantum research in recent years, aiming to become the global leader in this field by 2030. Apple is betting heavily on quantum encryption to protect its communications, like the one that secures iMessage chats. Microsoft, Intel, and IBM each have their own initiatives to dominate quantum mechanics, including research centers, partnerships with universities, and even startups focused on creating quantum chips. To infinity and beyond? It sure does look like it! Another great news for Israeli tech in the very exciting segment of #quantumcomputing 👩💻 Quantum Source announced on Tuesday that it raised $50 million - one of the largest funding rounds in Israel’s quantum sector! A whole new world of possibilities is unfolding as Quantum Source claims its technology will enable quantum computers with millions of qubits in just a few years. While competitors use silicon-based technology to build their quantum computers, Quantum Source employs a completely different approach based on photons (light particles), allowing it to overcome the hurdles slowing its rivals. 💡 Israel has around 10 companies in the quantum sector, some developing quantum computers and others focusing on supporting technologies. This year, the Israeli Quantum Computing Center was opened in Tel-Aviv. The Innovation Authority runs a quantum computing consortium that includes several #startups developing quantum computing technologies, further helping to position Israel as a global leader in the field. Despite being an impressive achievement, a true commercial quantum chip will still take at least 10 years to arrive. 😭 And the implications of this – whether positive (like revolutions in fields like medicine, artificial intelligence, and climate change) or scary (like collapsing online data security) – will need more time and billions in investments. But of course, there’s still a long way to go before a quantum computer has a real impact on everyday life. However, the first steps are being taken, and it’s only a matter of time before they change the way we process data, communicate, and even think about complex problems. With more and more resources being directed toward quantum computing, it’s only a matter of time before we see quantum machines truly impacting key sectors – whether it’s saving lives, predicting natural disasters, or even breaking the most complex digital defenses we have today. The future is quantum, folks. The question is: how ready are you for it? I’m ready, even though I’m scared. 😩 🤣

Companies like IBM and Biogen are exploring these applications. ◼Finance- Quantum algorithms can optimize trading strategies, portfolio management, and risk analysis. Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase & Co. are leading efforts in quantum finance. ◼Logistics- Quantum optimization can enhance supply chain management, route planning, and scheduling. Groundbreaking! An unexpected breakthrough in quantum computing. Oxford Ionics just announced that they managed to stabilize a Qubit using standard silicon technology instead of previously used lasers. That means that the commercialization of quantum computers might be just around the corner (perhaps before the end of the decade). While quantum computing companies like to talk about climate models and drug research, the application everyone is really after is code breaking. A quantum computer can literally hack into any system currently deployed. Combining that with powerful AI will produce the ultimate cyber weapon, enabling anyone possessing such technology to bring down the entire infrastructure of any country at will.

Could carbon nanotubes (CNTs) hold the key to scaling quantum computing sustainably? Quantum computing promises transformative advances across AI, cybersecurity, pharmaceuticals, and more, but scaling up remains a challenge. Current quantum computers experience error increases with each added qubit, hindering the development of large-scale computers. This is where CNTs come in. Their unique properties make them ideal candidates for stabilising qubits and reducing errors in quantum operations. At a recent talk at #Q2B24 Tokyo, C12 CEO Pierre Desjardins highlighted how CNTs could enable scalable quantum systems by shielding qubits from interference like charge noise. TrimTabs’ CNT production process shows that this could be done sustainably, raising the hope for quantum computing to ultimately help reduce carbon footprints in high-demand fields such as AI. We’re excited about CNTs' potential to pave the way for accessible, large-scale quantum computing, enabling it to address some of the most complex challenges in drug discovery, climate solutions, and beyond.
