Top 10 quantum breakthroughs and emerging trends: 2024. Here are my top 10 quantum breakthroughs and highlights of this year. Did any other quantum news catch your attention? #1 Google’s Quantum Computer Chip Willow undoubtedly tops my list - And it is a scientific game changer, but has also put the spotlight on quantum business, which is great news for the ecosystem. #2 National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has announced 2035, as the timeline for quantum-resistant cryptography, but enterprises must move faster. The first useful quantum computers are already anticipated during 2026-28, if not earlier. #3 Quantinuum demonstrated 50 entangled logical qubits with fidelities exceeding 98%, setting a new industry benchmark for scalable quantum systems. #4 QuEra Computing Inc. demonstrated new error correction method in January this year and made it one of the first. It achieved a logical qubit using only eight physical qubits, demonstrating a new error correction method using transversal gates. The company has also outlined a three-year roadmap to 100 logical qubits. #5 PsiQuantum received $940 Million (AUD) From the Australian Government — Making it one of the only quantum companies to receive such funding from a government. #6 Microsoft and Quantinuum announced 12 logical qubits, the most logical qubits on record at that time. Quantinuum provided the quantum hardware and Microsoft handled the error correction. #7 IBM has doubled its quantum cloud capability, and increased processor speed by 50-fold. This is an important step towards democratising quantum computer access. #8 China Introduced 504-Qubit Superconducting Chip, named “Xiaohong,” developed in partnership with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and QuantumCTek. This is one of the largest superconducting quantum chips to be publicly announced by any entity. #9 India, Israel, Germany, Singapore, China, S. Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia and several other countries have announced installation of new quantum systems, quantum strategy, and several national initiatives in 2024 #10 Microsoft and Atom Computing 's 24 logical qubits machine breakthrough. (Thanks Brian Lenahan for calling it out - now fixed my list) #11 As a BIG Bonus and to satisfy the quantum commercialisation leader in me, let me add this one. The Big payday for quantum computing companies this year. Still highly speculative, but quantum computing is getting a move on! Some reports have listed Honeywell’s quantum-computing business could be worth $20 billion, while Alphabet stock added almost $136 billion in market value days after it unveiled the quantum computing breakthrough - Willow. Other quantum computing companies have seen unprecedented growth in the recent months. 2025 looks quite exciting for the quantum business and something we've been discussing closely with Ravuri Niranjan, Ganesan Ramachandran, Shiva Koduvayur, Rainer Dumke and several others. What do you think?

I'm excited about the progress, that is happening in India, starting of NQM, support for startups, 6-Qubit QC and more. India will become a formidable QT player soon

I suspect a couple of these will be less impressive as additional details emerge, but overall good candidates in what I would extend to be the top 20.

As we know, quantum breakthroughs are governed by the uncertainty principle, once you look at them closely the facts unexpectedly change, and with time they simply decohere

Lots of enthusiasm and hard work paving the way, still a long way to go for India and for Quantum Technology as a whole.

Very good list. Would add that in june 7, 2025 was defined as the Year of Quantum Technology. It is note a tech advance, but may be an strategic one.
