At the recent World Academic Summit, organised by Times Higher Education in partnership with The University of Manchester, #NTUsg Vice President (Research) Prof Ernst Kuipers participated in a panel discussion on how universities can address local health challenges, sharing the stage with Sir Richard Leese, Chair of NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care, and Prof Olive Mugenda, former Vice-Chancellor of Kenyatta University and Chair, Board of Directors at the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital. Prof Kuipers emphasised the crucial role #universities play in #healthcare systems, not only in the provision and organisation of care but also as ecosystems for #innovation. He highlighted how interdisciplinary collaboration — bridging engineering, social sciences, and life sciences — fuels discovery and drives advancements in healthcare. Addressing the challenges posed by ageing populations in developed nations, Ernst Kuipers noted that the current labour-intensive model of healthcare provision is unsustainable. He stressed that universities will have to lead the way in rethinking healthcare, integrating it more closely with welfare and social care systems. In response to a question, Ernst Kuipers explained that while past innovations in medicine have come from biology, genetics, and life sciences in the last few decades, the next decade will see breakthroughs via #DataScience, #AI, and #Robotics. Thus, universities are ideally positioned to drive these advancements through their robust innovation #ecosystems and expertise. #WorldAcademicSummit #Leadership Wanda Preiser

NEW PROJECT ALERT 📣 📣 📣 The Planetary Health field seeks to understand the inextricable link between health and the environment. Embedding planetary health education in curricula is urgently needed to deliver new transdisciplinary, intersectoral solutions for communities facing complex planetary challenges. The “Catalysing Transformative Change in Planetary Health Education” (CATA-Earth) project has been accepted by the European Commission on Capacity Building in Higher Education. CATA-Earth brings together 6 Higher Education Institutions (HEI): UMC Utrecht, The Netherlands Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, Spain Asian University for Women, Bangladesh Noakhali Science and Technology University, Bangladesh University of Indonesia Indonesia Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Indonesia and one EU social enterprise partner: Elevate Health The overall objective of CATA-Earth is to build capacity for designing and delivering innovative community-driven planetary health education in climate-vulnerable regions in Asia and to create a new generation of change-makers with actionable planetary health knowledge and skills. This is achieved by employing Community Engaged Learning and Challenge-Based Learning methods and a “Co-Design, Co-Develop and Co-Deliver” approach to involve non-academic stakeholders at all stages. This project is brought to life by our esteemed colleagues George Downward, Nikki Giron, Camilla Alay Llamas, Joyce Browne, Sayed Mohammad Nazim Uddin, Nazmul Alam, Dr. Mohammad Mohinuzzaman, Diantha Soemantri, Dian Eka Safitri, Respati W. 🌟Citizen Science for Health: We present the poster ‘Do researcher want to engage the public?’ at the ESCA Conference in Vienna this week. The poster is based on a survey with the 24 research groups who has participated in ‘A Healthier Southern Denmark’ and presents the researchers experience with engaging and involving the public. In the Citizen Science project "A Healthier Southern Denmark," citizens from Southern Denmark have been voting for five years on which of five research projects should be prioritized and implemented. The citizens have enthusiastically embraced the task, with a total of 53,000 votes cast via SMS. The involved researchers from the region's hospitals and SDU, along with two Danish media partners (TV 2 FYN and TV SYD), have prepared them for the task. And more than 2,3 million citizens have been engaged to some degree in the projects during the years. But what do the researchers think? We asked 24 researchers who participated during the first five round of the project about their experiences and attitudes towards citizen involvement. For the past 20 years, the doors to the ivory tower have been wide open. It's no longer considered unprofessional for a doctor and researcher to involve citizens in their research - but how and how closely should citizens be involved? The overarching conclusion of this small study is that there is great potential for citizen involvement, and that it makes their research more relevant. All researchers in the study believe that it is important for citizens to have insight into the research process and easy access to health science research. Also, citizen involvement in research has the potential to improve participants' health, scientific literacy, sense of community, as well as increase policy relevance and overall public interest in health (Mark et al. 2023). Medical researchers have traditionally seen citizens as patients, but now hospitals have strategies mentioning a human-centered approach. And the culture is already changing towards a higher degree of citizen involvement. And here Citizen Science can be a powerful tool also when it comes to ensuring impact of new knowledge and new solutions in practise. Please come by for a chat during the poster presentation at the ESCA Conference!
