For years the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) just revised its certification standards – and they’ve adopted their own guidelines for what forest is worth protecting, WITHOUT consultation of conservation NGOs and impacted communities. The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil has historically refused to cut ties with exploitative rainforest destroyers that have been proven to be violating its certification standards. If the RSPO truly wants to right the wrongs created by the #PalmOil industry, it needs to address flaws in its auditing system and adopt explicit requirements for palm oil growers to remedy lands that were taken without communities’ Free, Prior, and Informed Consent. #Conservancy #WildAnimalsProtection #Matters Last month (November), I wrote a story on the effects of sewage disposal in rivers and on the environment, which is impacting the blue economy. The story was headlined "Chitungwiza effluent discharge:Double tragedy for humans and blue economy"https://lnkd.in/dim-Fqn8 Now, I have come across heartbreaking news stating that four rhinos died after drinking polluted water from Lake Chivero, which receives water from the Hunyani River, where the Chitungwiza municipal authority is disposing of sewage. https://lnkd.in/d-Marwcu These are the effects we are facing: we are losing our beautiful animals due to the irresponsibility of local authorities. We are losing many species due to the recklessness of our local authorities. Local authorities must be held accountable for all their operations, especially regarding sewage disposal. They should practice sustainable ways to deal with sewage. #LetsPracticeSunstainable ways of dealing with #sewage That's a tragic example of failing to prioritize conservation and environmental protection. When rhinos die after drinking water from polluted sources, it's a clear indication that our conservation efforts are falling short. #Then who is reversing the gains in conservancy that were made over the years, because many organisations are putting a lot of effort in conservancy?

While illegal deforestation persists in the Amazon, in the Cerrado, most deforestation occurs under authorisation from the state governments. The Brazilian Forest Code mandates preserving 80% of private forest in the Amazon, compared to only 20-35% in the Cerrado. "A significant distinction between deforestation in the Amazon and the Cerrado lies in the nature of land ownership. While a substantial portion of deforestation in the Amazon occurs on public lands, often linked to illegal invasions and land grabbing, in the Cerrado, it frequently occurs on private properties, adding a layer of complexity to regulation. The smaller area required for Legal Reserves in the Cerrado, coupled with greater flexibility on the part of state governments, contributes to the high deforestation rates." Beto Mesquita, SIM Associate, Environmental Advisory Board Secretariat. The Responsible Commodities Facility (RCF) recognises the simple necessity of collaborating with private landowners in the Cerrado to preserve the biome. Created to encourage the production and trade of responsible soy on already deforested and degraded lands, it forbids further agricultural expansion in areas of native vegetation. The RCF now operates as a financial framework incentivising farmers to join a growing group of deforestation-free suppliers, tackling deforestation in the Cerrado with immediate impacts. #cerrado #sdg15 #greenfinance #DCFsoy

Published yesterday by Trellis Group (formerly GreenBiz), Dylan McCall-Landry of Environmental Defense Fund explains how combining jurisdictional forest conservation (#JREDD+) with the power of markets is the best route to reducing #TropicalDeforestation. Dylan highlights the role of the #LEAFCoalition in catalyzing these markets, with leading companies having already committed up to $60 million in funding to Costa Rica and Ghana, and with new deals expected to be announced soon in #Brazil and Asia; and the urgent need for more companies to add to this critical investment for forest nations and their inhabitants. https://lnkd.in/d_mPuR56 #ClimateAction #Deforestation #ForestConservation
