If you want to have all your cloud application components run without needing internet access or needing a costly NAT gateway you can take advantage of VPC endpoints to be able to interact with AWS services while staying within the AWS network. Lambda functions can run in VPCs and you can connect to almost all other AWS services with VPC endpoints.
