Next in the Bias series - in group favouritism bias. Very well written by Rohit Gadarla. Great topic to discuss in election results month - the bias has been endowed with respectability by calling it Social engineering, voting en masse etc. 🐒😈It’s the idea of ‘othering’ to reaffirm one’s own identity - likely a false definition that leaves one open to manipulation. And it’s not just the unwashed heathens, all of us fall prey to it, when we define ourselves ‘just so’ - elite, educated, urban, corporate’s etc etc. In marketing and communication, the ability to reflect the lifestyle, vibe and language of the consumer results in a deal of identification. That requires true empathy with the consumer, and rejection of stereotypes (my favourite is ‘mothers/ women like to ensure they keep the house/toilets clean’) #behaviouraleconomics #consumerinsight #marketresearch #advertising #empathy
Ever wondered why birds of the same feather flock together? Or, why people often prefer to fraternize with those who share the same taste in music or TV shows? Well, that might be because of in-group favouritism. The 9th bias in our series ‘50 Cognitive Biases’ series explores how we tend to explore why we tend to prefer those who are much like ourselves.
