Hey everyone!! Finally, got our first research paper accepted at NIT Rourkela 🥳. Me and My awesome teammates Siddartha Aggarwal and Tejas Srivastava worked together on this in guidance of Dr. Anup K. Mandpuram in Electrical Engineering department of Delhi Technological University. The extensive research involved in identifying a field of interest, exploring new innovations, strategizing potential advancements, replicating previous results, implementing the innovation strategy, reassessing in case of unexpected outcomes, and composing the paper with clear graphs, tables, diagrams, and sections to ensure it is comprehensible to those unfamiliar with the topic is a great feat. This journey made me appreciate all the people that are involved in research work. Attending a conference to present your work is a fantastic way to wrap up your undergraduate thesis. For the last six months, starting in July 2024, I have been working at the SDSL lab of Dr. Punnag Chatterjee, PhD at the Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad. I completed my second conference paper (and first paper as the first author) titled "Application of Uniform Field Method to analytically model smart-material based bending actuators operating under d33 mode" under his direction and mentorship. Through the processes of #Homogenisation and the theories of #UniformFieldMethod and #MixingRules, this research addressed the issue of harnessing actuation from piezoelectric-based actuators when utilised not alone but in the form of composites. Due to its brittle nature, piezoelectric devices when used alone, can only be used for limited amount of strain, which is insufficient for any kind of actuation. When used with layers of Kapton and in a solution of Matrix Epoxy as a #MacroFibreComposite #MFC, we can use to achieve a wider range of actuation in terms of strain. I presented my paper at #COPEN13 at National Institute of Technology Calicut held during December 13-15 at their campus. #COPEN13 successfully created an environment that helped us all connect with experts from Academia and Industry from across the nation. My personal favorite session was the talk given by Prof. B Ravi, Director, #NITK, Surathkal. Where his #mantra of #Paper to #Patent to #Product to #Process is something I think we all should adopt. At the end after all these research and papers and patents, we should aim for the final product that can be used advantageously for the mankind. This is me in front of the Academic Block at IISER Berhampur. Among all other things that a research institute provides, this one does indeed come with nice aesthetics and a beach. However, it is not very ideal to stay in an under construction campus and life is indeed hard here as we are cut off from the main city (which is 20 kilometres away) and there are no local nearby markets to visit, no professors to interact with when you go for an evening walk (they stay in the transit campus which is in the Berhampur city) or for that matter, any PhD students either as their labs as well are in the transit campus. So why am I smiling here in this picture? Is it simply because I thought of making this LinkedIn post? Well, not really. Me and my friend Pratyasha Tripathy attended one of our old professor's (who took our introductory course on quantum mechanics) last lecture that he was giving to the junior batch. It was one of the most fun things I did in a while. This post is not to promote or demote one's ambition to join the IISERs but to simply reflect on the fact that life isn't straightforward anywhere and it sure as heck isn't the same here, infact even worse (I'm not mentioning a lot of detail here haha, officials might read this sometime), but to some extent, I enjoy the empty campus and hate it sometimes and that gives me the motivation to get around this section of life with a nice smile and "do it" attitude. All in all, this is NOT the last post about the state of #student / #research life at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Berhampur and more will be there when there's a stable internet connection here (I finally, officially ranted about it) :) .
