In the last few years, 3GPP has specified integrated access and backhaul (IAB) and network-controlled repeaters (NCR) as tools for network densification. In Release 18, 3GPP standardized network-controlled repeaters (NCRs) as a beamforming-capable amplify-and-forward relay node for coverage extension. There are similarities and differences between the NCRs and intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs). In this paper, submitted to IEEE Communications Magazines, we introduce the key features of NCRs, as specified by 3GPP Release 18, and perform system-level evaluations of NCRs in comparison with its alternative technologies.
